Had a productive day, got 4wd and front shafts out, oils drained and sump off, brake calipers/carriers and wishbones removed. Cant believe how easy turbo and manifold came off. Gearbox oil came out reather clean considering i havent changed it for around 5 years Embarassed
Found some very small metal swarf in the engine oil drain can so hopefully nothing too serious going on in there. The only thing that puzzled me is a small black fragment sitting in the sump pan when removed; its black and not magnetic so is either black alloy or plastic? Its about 6mm x 3mm, will try and get a good picture at some point.

Quite often a small piece brakes off the inside of the oil pump casing. It looks quite tapered and rounded on one end.

That could be it; there was no oil pressure problems before i took her off the road or would it not affect pump operation?

The best way i could describe it is a 6mm x 6mm square with a 2mm hole in the centre thats snapped in half?

That doesn't sound like the bit im talking about. The bit im talking about has no roll I think or its a little guide for the timing chain. I cant remember tho.
Its almost like a triangle with a rounded top.
Could do with a pic of the piece ou have found.

Ok so getting a photo of the bit never happened as i couldnt find it today but upon further inspection of the oil strainer i started to panic as i could see something else in it. I decided to remove it then refit sump so if sump gets damaged during engine removal it wont damage strainer.

After removing the strainer panic went almost to relief as i know now what the problem was...

Easy to guess what it is...

10 points to johnny cheers

So glad its only a rubber washer so hopefully no damage done as it appears it was all caught in the strainer

At first I was thinking injector seal as bob said, but rubber off rocker cover probably makes more sense about how it got in there

Well theres been a few chances over the years of how it could have got in there, i know there is no way it would of come out during an oil change as it was fairly well wedged in the strainer.

On a side note, am i right in thinking the metal plate around the strainer is a baffle?

Im gonna rebuild it and make some improvements. It needed to come out as the whole car is being sprayed including engine bay. Im still considering something different for the engine bay...

Yeah woody, piece of cake. All hubs, driveshafts were unbolted and completly removed and pretty much everything out the engine bay except loom as well.
