Anyone ever tried this? Any good?

I not a bad idea at all .... especially if you think you have a boost leak very simple idea but effective ..  

By pushing air through the intake, would that check the whole system?
Vacuum lines intercooler etc

It works a treat............when i was running close to 2 bar (christ that was nearly 10 years ago   ) and had a few boost related issues on full boost, I made one using similar bits and workshop compressor. Found all sorts of tiny leaks that you wouldn't of otherwise found.......the tricky bit is keeping the bung in place....like the guy in the vid says, don't stand in front of it because when it goes it really does. Mine shot off like a fuckin cannonball and ended up 100 yards away in the neighbours greenhouse .......opps

Would it work just as well with a foot pump? Does it cover the whole system? Vacuum lines and all that...

There is no reason you couldnt use a foot pump but your going to be there a while filling the system then if its leaking your spend more time pumping it up than checking for leaks lol ..more ideal for a compressor as you can set the regulator to say 20psi and it will just keep topping up if air is leaking out somewhere until you find it ..... compressors are very cheap these days and a handy thing to have dependant on use or intended use as to what size you go for .... look on ebay mate ...

I remember when i posted what I'd done to find my boost leaks, a few others tried it and got good results but theirs always one............someone came back saying they couldn't get it to work, and had given up because his neighbour was laughing at him (over the fence)......further into the conversation we discovered that he was being laughed at because he was trying to do it with a bicycle pump (image of man trying to pump engine up with bicycle pump   )

I bet he had legs or arms like popeye

I looked up the home made smoke kits not to long ago and looked a simple piece of kit, was pretty much a solder iron, flint and baby oil in a sealed container with airline adapters

Probably, if memory serves.....he was a one of the more special ones.....
