So lads what's the easiest way to find an oil leak? I have a really slow leak and for the life of me can't figure out where it is. As my car hasn't moved for many months there is a very fine patch on floor near the sump and gearbox.

With small leaks dont be misguided by a drip from any one component, it has probably worked it's way down from above and collected on a low point on the sump/gearbox ETC, so best to clean off and ensure it is as dry as possible, brake cleaner is good for this ensure you clean top down from the cam cover above where the leak is dripping. Then run up to get the engine warm, and check with a good torch starting at the top, and work your way down, use a finger to prod and probe see if you get an oily film on your finger.
My gearbox had oil dripping off it earlier this year, turned out to be a cam cover leak.

^^^^^^^^ as above mine was breather pipe at the top of engine! Also breather pipe was chucking oil out from gearbox as someone pushed the pipe right over!!

Thanks for the advice guys, it's just been one of those things that has been annoying me, and if it's an extremely slow leak at the moment it will only get worse when the car is in the road.

I've heard of people using some additive to the oil that show up under uv light aswell.

There is a product called dye-lite that we use at work, made by a company called Tracerline I think.
Works well if you have a good UL lamp, the UV on some torches dont seem to work that well, also best to use the UV lamp in the dark shows up a treat.
Saying that I would only go down the UV road as a last resort.

That's cool, I was just curious because never really heard of anyone using it practice. I won't bother unless I can't find it.

We use it on freshly built engines so when they have a hot test or break-in you can distinguish between any residual oil from the build or any fresh oil leaks as you use the dye-lite when you fill the engine not during the build.
