Howdo!

3rd/4th gear fork snapped ages ago and i'm only just getting around to writing about it.

I just saw 'pete the box slayer rebuild' thread and thought i'd better get my pictures up to help us all...

To get the ball rolling my photo album is here...
https://www.flickr.com/photos/124463176@N06/albums/72157668339813004/with/28318844631/

I will write about different photos properly another day soon.

Cheers,

Adam

I've had three boxes fail on me and i'm running a massive balls
tingling 220bhp/220ftlbs, first box third gear destroyed with a wonky gear change, second box a main bearing failed making some gears touch that really shouldn't of, and latest fail was 3rd/4th selector fork Sad

hopefully there's some good pictures in my list that will help people.

Something which is interesting and worth noting are the 'shifting springs' between 3rd/4th gear. All three of mine broke when 3rd/4th selector fork broke. Now I couldn't tell you exactly if they are part of the selector fork breaking problem or simply break as a result of the fork breaking... However I can tell you Nissan changed the design many years ago to reduce some slack/movement by introducing the wings, and they have been the hardest part ever to find stock... Probably because they fit nearly every 1990-1995 nissan gearbox known to man, and it's not just GTIRs that fail 3rd gear Sad

Mreguest's gearbox issues! 26847572593_31109c8d4f_zDSC_2046 by edward guest, on Flickr

in this picture the broken 3rd/4th ones are part number ending E01, brand new ones are E04 with extra 'springy wings' to reduce movement, E00 are my old 5th/rev in perfect condition.

I've got loads of new 1st/2nd and 5th/rev springy things but to be honest they seem perfect condition straight out of the old gearboxes.

3rd/4th springys are 'sold out' globally. You would not believe how many people I've been speaking to to get them. Part of the problem too is the new part number is listed as a 'baulk ring' as the description.

Many websites including amayama say they have some but when I placed my orders I got refunded within 24 hours. A million phone calls and emails later and...

Cut a long story short Nissan's main parts distribution centres/systems seem to work like this -
1) Japan, UK, Amsterdamn, United Arab Emirates can talk to each other.
2) Japan, USA and Canada can talk to each other.
3) Australia and NZ seem to be franchise garages/none existent, i'm not saying they can't get parts but they didn't seem to have 'main dealer' computers that knew where stock was... Does anyone know if Aus/NZ or any other countries have nissan distribution hubs/systems? I suspect russia do but their country, websites and language translations are bizzare...

Outside of japan the other countries can only get parts from those on their distribution list, e.g. Amsterdamn (1) can't get parts from canada (2). But if the parts are actually in Japan then 1 & 2 have direct access.

New part stock issues:
- Japan including discussions with amayama trading JAP/UAE = none in countries, back order with no date pending.
- UAE direct I found one piece, I bought the last one in the country, it cost £15 (how much!?!?) delivered to UK, now back
order with no date.
- UK I bought the last two pieces in the country, back order no date... (finally i have three!)
- Amsterdamn  = none in country, none on back order.
- Canada = none in country, none on back order.
- USA = I've found 6 pieces spread across texas and california, and will get them in a few weeks time fingers crossed. My contact there said he's expecting a system stock update this week to tell me if there are anymore in the country. If there are then i'm having them all for us in the UK.

If anyone's ever tried ordering from amayama or any other online nissan parts dealer and had the response something like "... back order try again in 4 weeks time..." then maybe this is why, there seems to be a nissan system stock update once a month. I guess when you've got 1000's of parts dealers globally and some of them are still on old computer systems, and you've also got a manual human labour stock check aspect to it all, things just take a while to figure out...

more 3rd/4th pics:

Mreguest's gearbox issues! 28397764955_a284b447fa_zDSC_0042 by edward guest, on Flickr

i can see why the selector and baulk rings could be more stable in the shaft axis and horizontal rotation. That said though all three of my springys were broken...

Anyway, i'll write some more when I get chance but thought i'd mention 3rd/4th spring thing asap...

Cheers,
Adam

Great post mate,
3rd/4th selector fork failure is quite common and i think Bob supplies reinforced replacement forks.
Its generally assummed they fail from excessive shift force, but tbh its more likely to stem from misalignment from sloppy springs.
Are you involved with gearboxs as part of your job? You seem quite technically minded, Very Happy
Also are those stock gears you've bought? They seem to have larger teeth but dont look like quaifes and cant be PAR.

Howdo - I have no idea what i'm doing and always throw myself in at the deep end. But i'm patient and can read instructions and do lots of research to make sure i get it right. Correct tools for the job etc, measure twice cut once Smile

If I had my time again I would of done motorsport technology at college/university, car fixing is my hobby. I have a completely unrelated day job here - http://hanntucker.co.uk/services.html

I always say if someone else can wave a spanner at it then so can I... Took me 3 weeks to change a turbo once and 4 weeks the gearbox, all on my drive way. And I mean 100's of man hours!

Been at this pulsar nonsense for 8 years and amased a huge pile of tools/parts/experience, had a normal N13 sunny before gtir, and micra before that, lots of bmxs and mountain bikes, always got my hands dirty... Got an 88 celica and a 50cc moped for support vehicles when the GTIR goes tits up, GTIR for life now Sad
(I need my head checking)

The only new gears you see is just 3rd gear quaife which coincidentally I bought of Pete a while ago. Everything else is standard, I have no intension of going more than 300bhp. Daily driving, no lag and good handling is my mission Smile

Cheers!

Generally is wear with synchro hub that ends up breaking 3/4 selector paired with old age/fatigue, good thing with upgraded fork is keeps you mobile so can drive off track and to workshop plus less parts broken and potentially churned through box the better .
New springs clips are good idea  especially as updated versions .
Bit of a pain they not stocked well, did UK Nissan say what Jap stock status was !

Unfortunately Japanese stock levels are showing as non check again in 4 weeks.
If there was absolutely no chance it would say discontinued.
However as stock and demand travels around the world they try and spread their stock appropriately.
This has other challenges too because enquiry demand and actual purchase demand can effect distribution of things too.
Some garages won't take your money and place an order unless they are sure the stock is possible.
I've placed a few orders globally for these things and been refunded on most of them. Basically I tried to order 9 from ever main country. Uae refunded 8, UK refunded 7, Japan refunded all. USA have found 6, 3 'pending', more available... Ooh, how much more we are yet to find out.
Amsterdam, Australia, Canada wouldn't take my money Smile
Typically they are around £6 or $6 unit price. Postage is crazy in places, alot of them do flat rate as they're not kitted out for international shipping. Uae post was about £10 for 1. Nissan usa want $75 only for post of 1 or anything up to shoe box!!! Shipping is the same price for everything less than a shoe box, then like $200 for anything bigger.
I've found a way around that though and have someone in USA who is going to send them me once I find out how many I can have...

I will get lots if I can and sell them on to the gtir community for what I paid covering all my costs.
Watch this space Smile

finally!!! after 6 months of messing around I have managed to get 26 springy things.

They have come from all over the place to my virtual shipping address in California to then get shipped to me in UK. Had to set up a virtual shipping address in California because it was the only way to get Items from Nissan USA sent to UK for sensible money. Nissan USA wanted to charge $75 just for shipping springs in one tiny box!

unfortunately 2 of the springs are a little bit rusty, they might clean up ok but first i'm gonna have words with Nissan, see if they'll refund 2 of them without me sending them back.

I propose to work out all my costs (including the rusty ones unless they refund them) then divide it up in to sets of 3 and sell them on. At 3 springs per car 24 would be 8 gearboxes. I have two boxes. Johnny GTIR and DC313 (dave) want some. That leaves 4 boxes, anyone else want some put your name down.

I sold the three I got ages ago to Pete (the box slayer) for £29 I suspect these from USA will be similar money. The reason i don't know the price at this moment in time is because my invoices and customs VAT etc paperwork is in my office at work, i'll get it all tomorrow...

Howdo lads!

Sorry for the delay been a busy september, can't believe it...

Cut a long story short...
- motorbike got nicked first week
- recovered 2nd week at a cost of £150 to myself (example story, government scumbags... http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/theft-victim-is-charged-150-to-get-bike-894376)
- few weeks ago the mega thunder storms hit next door but one neighbours and blew virgin media out on most of the street (only got it back 2 days ago), it absolutely fried their house, everything that was plugged in is dead, boiler/tvs/computer/phone chargers/washing machine etc... we got lucky it just ruined virgin and very strangely forced my garage lights on and i can't turn them off! Had to pull some wires out as the garage switch is fried...
- last week my car stopped working properly, won't always start, seems to be starter motor as all the other electrics work fine and will bump, had one on order from germany and they cancelled it this morning I don't know why yet, AARRGGHH!!!
- in parrallel with all the above my home DIY is full on, fixing guttering, painting and decorating, and i've been learning to plaster too by watching youtube and giving it a go, turns out it really is very difficult, feels like i've been doing it everyday and you have zero margin of error, the amount of shit job I've scraped off or sanded down outweighs what i've applied sucessfully... getting there though Sad

Anyway, springy things...

Nissan won't refund for the two rusty ones unless I return them to USA, this costs £11 post so I won't bother.
Covering all costs, paypal, post etc. equates to £8.09 each plus post.

Three required for a gearbox = £8.09 x 3 + £3 post (UK tracked signed for) = £27.27

Others - sorry they have all gone if bob and toast defo want them...

FYI - part number is 32609-03E04, I would try your local dealers and amayama every 4 weeks. There is likely some available somewhere. It was a difficult battle for me to find any and in the USA was were I got most. I bought all the USA stock so I could spread the postage costs. The mad thing is some of them actually came from Nissan Japan over to the USA even though UK and amayama couldn't get any from Japan... It's weird how it all works but simply keep trying, the systems stock check every 4 weeks i believe. If you can get any then buy many. They fit like 8 different nissans from 1990-95 all of which no doubt suffer 3rd gear shift fork breaking...

cheers,
Adam
