I have just dropped my gearbox off at the gearbox specialists.
I had a look today and under the diff you can see part of the magnet and then thousands of little bits of it clumped on things.
Theres no way I can strip the box and clean it all and rebuild it!

So I decided to drop it off.

Steve the gearbox man said he will strip it down and then phone me to discuss what he finds.

Wont be until Monday afternoon tho.

Hopefully it's not to much to sort out..

That magnet definatly wont of helped mate as that's a large foreign body, as you well know.

My man is building me one good box out of my two mate even though they only basically require 1 part each.

Anything else you are more than welcome to. Literally everything else is there.

Did you split the casing apart to look?

Thanks Ross. I will keep that in mind mate.
Hopefully it's just a clean it needs.
The magnet is a soft material so fingers crossed..

Yes mate I took the casing off.
Everything I can see looks fine. Just looks like the magnet has exploded.
One of the bolt heads on the diff has a groove in it but other than that I couldn't see any damage.
Hopefully they dont find anything else wrong.

I do hope so mate.
One of the bolts on top of the diff was chewed up on the top. I said I thought maybe the magnet had done it and he said the magnet was to soft to do that. So im hoping it's an old injury and not something else that has broken off..
We will see monday.
I have £300 to spend so hopefully it can be sorted for that.

You'll be fine mate. Not gonna need anywhere near that spending on it Wink I'll nudge my man if you need any silly bits.

All being well it will have just bounced round the casing, if it had fucked anything you'd of seen it after popping the casing. Did it still drive ok?

Yeah it drove okay.
It was just going into gear that was obstructed. Some times it would glide into gear and then other times it was blocked.
So im guessing the magnet pieces were obstructing it.

Not knowing much about gearboxes, but do all boxes have a magnet on the drain plug?

I would say so. Sumps, rear diffs have them aswell.

It's not a magnet on the sump plug, it's a separate magnet in the gearbox just slotted into the casing Smile

Item #14
http://nissan4u.com/parts/sunny/er_n14/1990_11/type_23/power_train/transmission_case_and_clutch_release/illustration_2/

It is a half donut shaped magnet that sits in a half donut open slot on the bottom right and corner of the bell-housing and held into place when the end case is attached.

I have been down to see the gear sets after they have been removed...
Some Teath have been chipped and 4th gear wouldn't turn. While I was there he took the 4th gear off and you can see that it's been under some heat as the shaft looks scorched. .
We have decided to strip it all apart and I have bought another gearbox off Gaz and the bloke is building me a good box out of the two.
The race on the diff bearing is pitted too so that's being replaced.

At least you found the problem, poor box must have been through the mill a bit, that magnet probably had that much on it that's why it came off Laughing

I had a feeling it was more than just the magnet mate.
I'm glad he is charging me a decent price tho Smile
All in i will have a rebuilt gearbox with new bearing for around £300
That isn't bad to be fare.

Exactly woody. Should be an easy mind about the gearbox once it's done Smile

I have just got back from picking the donor box up from Gaz.
Cost me a little extra tho. Had to bribe the kids with a mcdonalds meal haha only took 2 hours there and back Smile

Dropped the donor gearbox off at the specialists and he he was shocked that I had taken him a complete gearbox.
He thought I was just taking him another gears.
So the labour cost is going to be more than he quoted.
Oh well. The gearbox I'll be sorted by next week some time and thats all that matters!

Lol well if you were so proficient in stripping it dowm for him you would have probably done it yourself so at least giving him the whole thing ensures he has everything

Lol i know yeah.
I did tell him I had a mate in Stoke with a gearbox that the selectors were fucked. That I could buy for the parts he needed.
Like you say. He has everything he needs there now. Just a new bearing for the diff that he has to get for the build now.

Im looking forward to pulling mine apart, there's nothing wrong with it but when i bought it, the input shaft bearings sounded noisy but over the years they have quietened down scratch
At least you will have some more spares with another box should the worst happen.
