1None starter! Empty None starter! 29th April 2015, 1:18 am

Evening,
Any ideas what needs checking here...
Tried starting my GTIR tonight - it wont crank over
The 1/4 turn all the normal dash lights come on - the next 1/4 turn you hear the electrics and the everything get ready as normal - then when you finish the full turn there is no click or crank??
Car fired up perfectly on Saturday...any ideas what I need to check?
The symptom is the same as if you had an immobilizer - so when it would normally try and turn over its just silence, not even a click??
Any help appreciated so I can track the problem down.
Thanks

Can you hear the fuel pump prime? If so check the wiring to the starter motor and see if anything has come loose, if not perhaps check voltage to it, dodgy starter motor perhaps?

I'm pretty sure you hear it - ill double check tonight...my fuel regulator under the bonnet shows pressure from 0psi to near 4psi when I turn the key too. (had an aftermarket one added to key fuel mix right after being on rolling road)
its started 1st time every time for months.....always catches very 1st crank (until now)

check starter trigger wire that should be feeding 12v+ when ign key in cranking position. seen these come off before.
You got any immobilizer on starter circuit that could be issue ?

No immobilizer to worry about currently! Battery is fine - 2 things checked.

test the trigger feed to starter solenoid to see if feeding 12v+ when cranking if it is then issue with solenoid or particularly bad trigger wire joint.
Have seen trigger wiring broken/disconnected from solenoid on 3 or 4 sr engines.
You can put ignition key to ign position, make sure car out of gear & supply a suitable cable to solenoid then contact it to the battery live to operate solenoid & see if starter works, if it don't, take it off & bench inspect it. If it does work then check back on the solenoid trigger for fuses/relays, wiring failure in depth.

ahhhhh after all that....seems it might just be the battery! enough charge to show full beams but a 13.2 charge not enough to crank it. (hopefully just that anyway)
So a full charge over night should cure it finger crossed Razz
if not..............

Sounds very possible mate .... once you get it running just chuck an electric tester on the battery to make sure the alternater is throwing a charge back in .... has it been sitting for a while or you think it has a drain somewhere ????

Used it on Saturday for Incarnation....didn't try it till Tuesday night. Not 100% sure how old or the condition of the battery....put the tester on it an it had a charge of 13.8...so as you turn the ign it dropped to 13.2.
Going to get a new battery anyway.....hopefully it just that Cool
I don't fancy a witch hunt for a electrical fault Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

seeing me looking at the dizzy and fuse boxes thinking I have no clue lol

It should start on 13.2v .... as it only takes 12.4v wich the battery should be anyway ....i would expect that reading for when its running fella ...

Shows how much I know...I guess I'll find out when I drop the battery back in tomorrow...maybe then hunt for the fault will continue then Exclamation

battery voltage would appear ok & expect it getting charge if reading that high.
would expect here starter solenoid click even if battery was to low to actually crank.
Rather than just buy a battery attach another from another car with jump leads.
I would be suspecting starter solenoid, trigger wire & fuses etc but best you rule out the basics without expense if possible.

When I was having a look tonight I was getting one click when the IGN was fully turned.

You got another car & jump leads, if so used that battery & leads to rig it to yours & see if starts, cheap & quick way for you rule out or point out battery without spending out .
If does turn out be some issue with battery be sure check charge voltage as if regulator gone bad & it charging to high voltage it will damage new battery .

I grabbed out my charger...so the battery is on a full charge tonight...if that does sort it I'll get a new one. If not the hunt continues...

Sounds like your battery is just showing a surface charge, jump start it, check the battery with a multimeter it should show 13.5-14v then put your heated rear screen and heater on and highlights and see what your multimeter says

I personally would of said there is a fault with that battery if its standing voltage was 13.8. I would expect a decent fully charged battery to be around 12.8

As others have said

Would expect a battery fault with standing charge that high.

If not and you can definately hear the starter solenoid click the once then the trigger wire will be getting power so then it could possibly be a boogered starter motor itself.

If so then give me a call daniel
