starter motor

My replacement starter motor stipped working yesterday
Luckily i had bought new bushes to recon the one i had taken off. So i stripped it back down and installed them.
Then swapped them over and the car started on point
Just taken the replacement starter motor apart and the same issue is there. 2 of the 4 bushes have worn away to the point that they no longer touch the internal spline.
Nice easy cheap repair for anyone else that has this issue!

I took all the magnets out and cleaned off all the carbon off them and inside the casing. Then swapped the old part for the new part and bingo its a reconed starter motor.

For the price mate its worth having some at hand.

These are what came out.
You can see how much material has worn away over 25 years.

Nice mate, might pick one up myself, not expensive to do.

Is it an easy job to do Stu?

Im sure if you can build a gearbox to such precision a starter motor will be a walk in the park lol

not with starter motors. Its all electrickery and im useless at it.

Two 8mm bolts on the end. Undo and pull them all the way out. They are about 8 inches long.
Then the cap will come off with a small tap to the edges.
When its off theres just 2 small screws holding the bushes plate on. Undo those and remove and also the nut on the outside holding the wire to the terminal.
Thats all it is to replace the bushes Neil.
To clean the magnets. Remove the spline. Its free so just pull it out.
The magnets have spring plates holding them in place. Thin nose plies and prise them out and the magnets will come out.
Its all straight forward mate. When you start taking it apart you will see how simple and straight forward it is

Thought i'd go grab my old one out from the garage but just pulled it apart and then remembered why it was buggered. Armature commutator bar is burnt out due to worn brushes fusing to it so only fit for the bin. I'll refurb my new one though
