i brought this as a non runner due to engine knock,
iv started stripping it down but i found the turbo had lots of forward and back movement no side to side play turbine rotated smoothly
on removal ov turbo found
exhast port one rh side slightly oily, lh fine
ports 2,3,4 ok

minor film of oil in intercooler but i think thats down to the turbo
compression worries me though
Cyl 1. 125psi
Cyl 2. 120psi
Cyl 3. 120psi
Cyl 4. 125psi

i found these in parts in the lower sump pan they seam to be bronze/copper???
post can be found on gtir under the same username sorry cant post link

Could be parts of bearing from turbo gone through oil drain to sump or as you have knocking, parts of bottom end bearings.
as you have a lot of metal bits you going need do full engine strip to clean it all out & inspect all parts for damage & machine rebuild if possible.
Exhaust port could be worn valve seal/guide.
Problem with most of these rebuilt 54C's is they done by people who have little experience thus lots of errors are made,.
Compression is even but low so likes of cam timing needs looking at plus if strip it you need work out how much been skimmed & cylinder volumes so can put it right if needed.

Are there 2 thrust washers in a turbo as that could exsplain the float in the turbo

16my GTIR Empty Re: my GTIR 3rd March 2015, 8:57 pm

Spark plug spike

Spark plug spike

Same bits were in my sump as well mate see my post:

http://www.gtir-motorsport-club.com/t3617p15-ticking-knocking-noise

Ended up as a spun rod bearing but still never found out where those bits were from as my thrust washers and turbo thrust bearing were still there wtf!

Bad news was I needed a full engine rebuild and sorry to say but yours sounds the same mate

17my GTIR Empty Re: my GTIR 3rd March 2015, 9:24 pm

My thoughts was it was that but waiting now til Thursday to get the lower sump off then check the big ends I pray it's not picked up on the crank, you have low compression like mine on the same pistons?? How far are you with your engine strip what you found so far?

18my GTIR Empty Re: my GTIR 3rd March 2015, 9:58 pm

I did the rebuild straight away I found one of the oil jets had snapped off and caused oil starvation to the rod bearing, my crank was scored so used a spare for the rebuild. I found more brass bits the same which were stuck inside the oil pick up strainer so just put it down to a previous blown turbo before I had it. Did the rebuild myself and have done about 4000 miles with no issues 'touch wood'

Ok fair play bud I better start saving for a engine then ..

20my GTIR Empty Re: my GTIR 3rd March 2015, 10:48 pm

luke s

What parts did you replace in the end? Are you still running those pistons and head gadget? What compression have you got now? When your engine was poorly what was your oil pressure like cold and warm?

With that much in your sump the only answer is full rebuild or secondhand engine. No two will be the same it will need stripped checked and hours of cleaning to make sure everylast bits out if your rebuilding that one

22my GTIR Empty Re: my GTIR 4th March 2015, 9:15 am

luke s

I agree with you bud but just intrested to know what could be causeing the even but low compression as spike had the same issues and compression as mine

will be spending good 1.5k to sort this mess out & map it properly & if unlucky more.
Cost is fairly reasonable if can build engine yourself & have good knowledge, without that it quite costly & a headache.
