Yes . . Lol . . Avoid the 2.4 . Under powered and will blow the head gasket for fun...
3.0 litre is a good engine . Try and find one that hasn't ever towed .. The 3.0 will run hot when towing and can crack the head internally. . But once cooled down will drive fine around town until you put it under strain .. I.e up hill on motorway.. Then will boil over...

Have lots of experience with the Toyota 4x4's

Thanks for that, read about the 2.4 head problems. Ive seen a 94 3.0TD ssr-x with 75K on the clock so might contact the chap tomorrow. It will be towing if i buy it but not normally anything too heavy. Is it recommended to upgrade the cooling system?

Id make sue the rad is good prob fit A triple core . From experience the 3.0 are more likely to have head issues if they are auto. . Because off oil cooler in rad. . . . Take it for a good drive get it hot. . Then open bonnet whip off the rad cap. Should be very little pressure. . Be warned tho. If the head is cracked and you take the rad cap off it'll take your hand k of.. . Just be careful....
Then give it a rev . If you get a mushroom of water out the rad the engine is goosed.. That's how i test them

Reason auto is more likely to have probs. Is Coz when towing etc the auto box works hard heating the oil up which then has to try and be cooled by a rad that's already hot. This then cause engine temp to rise because of extra heat from auto box oil . . And that then cracks the head.. . .but once engine cools cracks seal . . And you only get a prob once its hot again...

Sorry to jump on your thread again, have you had any dealings with pajero's? Missed out on that surf and they are not as common as the pajero's as i've seen quite a few lwb 2.8td's for sale.

Ah yes, you make a good point there. My brother has a k reg isuzu pickup, think its an old model rodeo and its his second, not a bad truck either.
