So can the altenators freeze in the cold?

started my car this morning and all was fine, drove 100 metres when the car was warm and the battery died, is this a common thing? no warning lights on the dash saying the battery was in use.

Thanks

Either weak alternator or battery is bad as cold weather amplifies any battery defects greatly.
need test & charge & test battery & get car running & test alternator output running & under load with high load elecs switched on .
Check the belt & pulleys too .

think the altenator was replaced last year sometime, it was a 2nd hand unit though and when it did go the battery light was on the dash, not today though, its been garaged for quite a while and this was the first night i left it outside.

i did have everything switched on, stereo, lights, heaters, wipers etc so maybe that was an issue? never had a problem with this and battery is around 2-3 years old

Thanks ill get this all checked out and see what happens

My guess would be battery from your comments & cold weather you got.
Do check cables/belts etc just rule out obvious.
Check battery voltage & if alternator output proves ok when tested I would look into new battery from likes of banner or yuasa.
Could just of been pulled down due to short trips, cold weather & loads of elecs on, if charges ok & voltage & gravity tests seem ok you could try it for a while but if seems weezy again new battery would be good.
You can use a multimeter or buy a simple battery/alternator meter for few pounds on ebay .

got them both tested and they are fine, when i went back it started first time an ran for a while then died again, tapped the altenator a few times with a ratchet and it seemed to work, should i start looking at a new altenator?

Like johnny, I would check all wiring & plugs first.
other thing to check is when cuts out can other elecs work such as central locking hazards etc !
If all elecs are dead then it wiring related from battery.

When it happened my stereo was skipping, the the avcr went off and stereo, went out this morning and started it again, alt wasnt spinning so tapped it again and it started spinning again, it was a 2nd hand unit so maybe i should grab a refurbed one just to be safe, ill get a proper look at the plug this weekend.

If alternator pulley not spinning I would put checking your crank harmonic damper pulley on check list as when bonding fails drive to alternator is effected .
Take alternator belt off & inspect alternator spin freely & bearings feel good.
Inspect crank pulley bonding.

From what has been said its not sounding like the alternator.. But just in case it is you should research the alternator.. If your handy with a soldering iron sometimes you can just replace the bushes in them for not much more than Pint. Saves you a small fortune leaving more money for more toys Smile

Me.thinks Mr B has this spot on.
Sure does sound like the outer rim has seperated.

Would this cause the boost issue too?
The sound could be the noise of the belt/pulley slipping?
Lack of amps could be affecting the ignition/timing?

Just throwing this out there. I'm most likely way off but worth a thought Laughing

Yeh that along lines of what I mentioned in his elec thread. possible low voltage causing issues & needs checking as even fuel pump/pressure could be down due to low pump supply voltage.

the throttle position sensor was to try and fix another issue i had prior where i was getting a stuttering at half throttle when i was driving for long periods of time at the speed limit (fine when full throttle), if it was cheap enough i was going to just replace it anyway.

i really need to get everything fixed on it once and for all

i'm sure someone on here could probably lend you a known working tps swiitch.
Expect a few people could sort you a crank pulley bolt & washer too.
You got the key for the pulley to crank keyway !?
Erics in US was doing the crank harmonic damper pulley for under £100 a while back & I had couple of um . FRSport got them at about $138USD just shame at mo exchange rate is weak.

i dont really mind the price of the pulley tbh, but its an expensive thing if its not the issue, i was mostly just curious how much the new parts actually were, i also dont mind buying one 2nd hand but i just need to know if thats the actual issue before buying the parts.  booked it in to a garage to fix the electrics and diagnose everything thats wrong so i can start getting it working again.

going to take the wheel off on saturday and inspect the belt and pulley to see if i notice anything, seems revving the car slightly kicks the alternator in once i switch it off and start it again, and check the connections to the alt.

Noticed a few things on my avcr (which seemed to have been reset after leaving it garaged yesterday) reading if they are even accurate (injector reading spike to 70%+ on occassion when driving normal) and the throttle % reads 0 when i have the throttle pressed lightly, again driving normal speeds but i dont even know if the avcr reading are something to go on. that was my thought about the tps

Thanks for all your patience and help, im totally terrible at cars and i dont know what the crank keyway is so ill say no to that

Keyway or woodruff key is the tab that sits in a groove at
The end of the crank wich locates your crank pulley ....

I would of thought if you were to draw a line across the crank pully with tipex or something visible, then when running it you would notice if the pulley has started to seperate?
