That Tripple QX cheep ass crap is £56 for 10l delivered and it does tick the right boxes
It's fully synthetic, 75w90 and it's gl4/5

I know you get what you pay for but aslong as it meets the correct requirements I should be fine to use it shouldn't it? Like I said I'll just cut the service interval drastically and put something decent in when im not face with so much to do at once

Not everyone same with opie as they do 15% & better.
On standard 10% opie works out around £90 for 7ltrs
Opie never the cheapest & Millers normally can be found cheaper in UK
Gearbox oil works hard, if totally broke &on budget then buy likes of comma or similar fully sythentic, it will be ok in a low power road car& changed regularly but anyone on decent power or doing track work wants decent tranny oil.

Opie do 5ltrs of crx for £62 on eBay

This is for a road car running stock power so shoulda be under extreme conditions.

Like o said I know it's false economy but I'm going to buy cheap now and swap out for some decent quality oil at another time. I like to use high quality oil but this £50 saving on oil could be the difference between being ready for the RR day on the 19th or not

compare top spec to run of the mill lower cost brands can be night & day in terms of improved shifting & monitoring things like gearbox heat . In Bills scenario a smart budget buy will probably be fine due to low power & light use. High power, lots of miles & track work wants good oil. Transmissions have immense amount of stress & friction & also are f00king expensive & annoying when explode whine or shift poorly ...

Top brand oil should be do-able for around £70 to £80
sensible budget oil probably £40 to £50

I think its just a load of commercial bollox and we just bent over and let it take us. I wish we had an Aldi verson of automotive lol the price of marketing is passed onto us. Its all about money money money gready barstool companies.

I guess a good bad gear change and grind is alot worse than some half decent oil. I think you have come to the right conclusion.

Within reason yes. Believe me some big oil chains say gb lubricants up newcastle sell it to trade you can take your own container its same as you get in smaller 5l containers just they sell it cheap as they buy it by the 45 gallon drums or tanker full. Look into all sorts of products a lot are made in the same factory and re labelled for different stores and price can be double or treble

Now i am not back tracking engine oil yes well worth paying more but i can see no difference in exactly whats in the right cheaper box oil to most more expensive.

All must meet a certain standard both engine and box oils but soon as you start paying more for engine oil you see and read the differences are big but box oil i always belived was very similar properties between the price range

Good engineering costs money or do you think those Chinese turbos are as good as Garretts !

To some extent the commercial element has increased the cost difference greater than it needs to be but if you compare quality gearbox oil to likes of comma difference is huge, I have seen gearboxes improved drastically through just change of oil brand & also seen 200,000 mile plus gearboxes in superb contition due to quality oils used.
Indeed some cheaper brands may offer a lot for what they charge but it a risk & time consuming & costly to find out for sure.

Yes I agree but Its the re branding of things that I dont like, yes good engineering costs but so does marketing it as super duper track day awsomeness.

China is a different matter the crap they churn out is just that, they dont care about legal matters such as copyright, trade marks and do so at their pleasure lol all the more reason to plague the west with the carrot on the stick ie cheap imports.

I live local to Morris lubricants and always used them in the £250,000 plus combines and tractors which were running close to 20 hours a day full choke. I dont know anything about it really but just as you said going down to the local petrol station is not going to get you a decent oil but the motorsport price tag is also stupid.

Your oil API & GL labelling is all a basic guide to getting a decent spec oil, Many oils work better in different manufacturers gearboxes & most of the better engineered oils far surpass the market quality indexing & far better shear handling capability & frictional loss along with enhanced features improving syncro function & plate lsd function.
Gearboxes tend to get seriously neglected for quality oil & service frequency & considering the complexity of moving parts & immense stresses the oils ae subjected to it is bad practise.

Morris lubricants are much like Miller oils as both UK companies that specialise in oil engineering, Morris very well known in agriculture & heavy machinary & millers more so in performance car.
Biggest thing you need be careful with when using never heard of oil  brands is does it really meet the spec being stated & how much are you really saving.
£70 for 7ltrs of decent oil is not that excessive if you really need it & that the main thing really 'do you need it' ? are you on track a lot, is your gearbox under extreme duress that a better oil could be worthwhile the expense !

mt90 is good & about £15+ a litre I expect.
silkolene (now Fuchs) syn 5 is good but expensive like the redline
Castrol Syntrax also quite good but about same price as millers etc (£10-£11 a litre if shop for it)
Millers is one of the slightly better ones in terms of pricing but that requires a bit of work from the buyer & not ebay or opie generally unless promotion ongoing.

Glad I came across this thread, looking for what gearbox oil to use.  Previously always used Redline MT90.  Really informative posts goodpost
