broken down :(

Been having a few electrical issues lately and when i started my car at work today the battery light stayed on and my gauges actually started working again (they have not worked in about a year, anyway i broke down as my engine lost power and just cut out so i was running on battery power only for about 12miles, got jump leads and started it again but it just wore tge battery out, it sounded like the starter motor or altenator was making a horrible sound when the car was running (like a pulsing scraping). Is this my altenator dead or is there an earth which goes to tgis which could cause this issue, car has been sitting parked all day while ive been at work

Sounds like the bearing in the alternator. check earths tho if things aint work

I mean as well as the alternator as that will be the problem. Put a multimeter acoss should get around 14.4v when charging

There is the connector on the back of the alternater that can break away .... i would get the car running then chuck a tester on the battery you should see over 12.4 volts ideally around 13 to 14 volts if the alternater is throwing a charge back from what you was saying and the symptoms i would be leaning towards the alternater being fooked with the noise your describing ...

Yup its the bearings in the alternator, aa came and there was bits of metal flying out of the alternator so thats what they said, gutted

No fault would be better but at least its a cheap easy fix could of been alot worse and more expensive

Lol yeah ive got aircon, is it a pain to do with aircon in?

I ended up removing my air con when I replaced the alternator as i just couldn't get the bolt out with the pump in place. Others on here might know a way but everything I tired didn't work.

yeah your gonna have to drop the ac pump unfortunately, then remove the alternator with the cast bracket attached then remove the pivot bolt when its off

make sure you disconnect the batt lead before working on it as you can blow the voltage stabilizer on the replacement unit if you plug the thing in with the battery connected ; )

Is dropping the ac pump alot of work?, i want to try and do the job myself

No just take your time and good on you for trying yourself. Are you keeping aircon after ?

Yeah i may just keep the aircon in, doesnt really help performance removing it does it? Yeah i like doing this sort of stuff as it amazes me how much garages charge for anything to do with these cars

Yes it uses abit and the whole set up is heavy but if you have no need dont remove it as so many do. Just was goin to say as you would need a different belt. Stick a new belt on with new alternator. Do you have a windy gun ? As you will prob need to fit your pully if its a recon/exchange unit

Thats fine then. I crap with links google windy gun it basically a gun which vibrates and spins at same time to remove stuff like nuts and bolts. Ie on your alternator if you needed to swap pully it would just spin you would need a windy gun or a set of grips n socket set but trying to hold pully and slacken at same time is tricky or you could damage pully. All this is not important if bobs one has it on
