Hi,

On the back of the cluster are 3 main plugs, and a small black box type plug. What does the black box do?

Never seen that. Mine had a small white 2 pin on the back, I assumed it was an add on for the airbag warning light but I never checked it out as the airbag is missing.....

Thats the one. what does it do?

i've been struggling with my speedo for awhile
changed sensors
changed cluster
no luck
i've just got my hands on a series 2, i'll swap the speedo from the series 2 into my series 1 cluster to give it a go.  or is it easier to swap the flexible circuit board?

Does anyone know if i can by pass the speedo cluster and wire the speed sensor feed from gearbox directly into the ecu?  unless there's a signal conversion happening on the cluster side before it goes to the ecu?

*realized what i typed was not matching what i was saying in my head hehe

Swap the board on the back
The only difference between the two is the wiring track on the board so if that's good then just change that

I'm not sure what that black box actually does as some have got it and others not and it seems to make no difference whether it's there or not, so I would be interested to know what it does too but my guess would be something like a voltage stabiliser

Yup way easy to change the circuit board rather than take the cluster apart and changs the speedo.

If I understand your question correctly, the speed signal actually goes to the ecu first and then to the cluster.

You can also wire the speed sensor directly to the cluster bypassing the ecu if needed (for example if you have removed the factory ecu) but I'm yet to confirm that on my car

i thought the speed sensor goes to the cluster first then the ecu?

or have i got it wrong?

kuz if in fact i can wire directly to the ecu, i can use my ecutalk display for speed instead

It wires to ecu and then to cluster. Are u missing the factory wiring or something?

this shows it going to cluster first then to ecu
or am i reading it incorrectly

Hmm geeze can anyone help us out here? I'm trying to find the thread I was using when I was looking at speedo wiring. I might have it wrong based on that.

Not the best picture, but this shows the speed sensor going directly to the speedo gauge - and then on to the ECU. This is why the speedo converters also change the top speed limit on the ecu.

Thanks guys. So sorry nick, I looked at one of those diagrams, but it was so stuck in my head it was ecu first for some reason. Strike one for me!

good to know!
i'll try the new cluster first

if not i'll try cleaning up the plug, or construct a new harness of some sort to connect direct to the speed signal screw on the back of the cluster.  i have a feeling maybe the pins on my plug are not making full contact.

on a side note, does anyone know what the speedo does to the signal before sending it to the ecu? or does it simply pass the signal off to the ecu?
can i buy a relay or signal conversion device and wire it direct to the ecu? I ask, bc im comfortable using my ecu talk display for speed .
