No mate you dont need the engine on as described earlier with the order of bleeding that goes with most brake set ups make sure you keep the resevior topped up then once you have bleed all the way round and closed off all the brake nipples pump the pedal and it should go hard with a few pumps are you just doing a fluid change ?

when Ive bled mine in the past without the engine on the brakes seem fine, as soon as the engine is running the pedal goes straight to the floor, so must be cos the servo isnt on or whatever Question id suggest a bleeding without the engine on then to be sure with it idling.

Buy a easy bleed if you struggle or are doing it by your self.only time i have struggled is if the master cylinder is weak. If you get good pedal then loose it once started normally means still air in

Yeah so I'm having a helluva time bleeding my brakes. I've done it twice and then paid someone to do it. Still goes to the floor/ have to pump them to get it to stop while driving. Any tips!??

you will have air trapped (more than likely in brake proportioning valve.

youll need to buy a power bleeder such as an eeziybleed think there made by gunsons and quite cheap to buy.
heres link

do not keep bleeding through all 4 brakes but just the one furthest away from master cylinder.
loosen the bleed nipple and let the fluid pass through whilst having someone keep an eye on the filler reservoir. you may need to fill this 3-4 times but eventually it will pull the air through.
once you've done that then go round all 4 again and problem should be solved

some cars are a booger to bleed if air gets caught as it just keeps going back and forth and never leaves the system under conventional pumping of the brakes.

im assuming you have the bleed nipples at the top of the caliper???
only say this as ive seen people fit the calipers on the wrong way round with bleed nipple at the bottom so air woulod never be able to leave the caliper body  Surprised

Stock calipers/lines as for as I can tell. Rotors are drilled/slotted but rusty as heck. Not worried too much about that tho. Pads are solid, post of life left, not sure what brand. Thanks Bob, I will try that method today. I had used a vacuum pump before but I just did the traditional method.

I've got an easi bleed but it will only fit screw type and the gtir is a sort of quarter turn cap and my kit just won't fit it. Any ideas bob?

yeah that's no use as air just goes back and forth
just bleed through n/s rear (assuming rhd, if lhd then o/s rear
fill reservoir bottle around 3 times which should be enough to pull air through
then go round all 4 as normal
