I have a 2 post ramp at my disposal , Air tools etc
But would be doing it mostly on my own

Honestly which way would you change the clutch ?

I was going to drop the engine and box fit the clutch and refit and reckon it could be done in a day .
The other option is to remove diff etc and drop gearbox that way .. <--- never done it that way

Honest opinions please

Remove diff from transfer box then it becomes just a fwd gearbox

If you have jiggly bits you wanna do to the engine at back then drop the lot as it takes not much longer and you've not got to struggle.

Which ever way you do it do not leave g,box hanging from input shaft on drive plate centre as you'll bugger the drive plate up and weaken the springs.
That's why some of them break prematurely and people say clutch is shite but Infact it's just there arms are aching and they've left 50 odd kg of metal hanging on a thin bit of metal with a few springs around it lol

If you have the y bracket drop the lump.
If there's any other stuff that needs doing down the back of the engine ie water hoses etc drop the lump otherwise in situ is easy on a ramp.
Ive had my box in & out several times on the floor on my own & it's not too bad just time consuming.

Sure we left the Y bracket off when we built it ..
What parts are needed bob if i leave engine in place?
Any gaskets ? or just sealant and oil

GTIR James

Sealant, oil, clutch, bearing, split pins for drive shafts, brake cleaner,

Just good quality sealant and oil

Little tip............when mating the gearbox back to transfer box always put sealant around the two shaft seals where they meet so if the seal gets damaged when replacing the shafts the oil can't pass through the sealant so in affect it becomes a third seal. Nothing worse than having to pull it apart again as a seals been nicked and dripping oil through the weep hole

Oh and make sure you have some of those plasters with little pics of rabbits etc as when you rip the skin off back of your hand it will make you happy when you stick the little bunny rabbit over your poorly  Laughing
