the fact the speedo doesnt work would get me worried personally.
could be a simple fix or an expensive fix
i know my car needs a few thing doing but havent done as i cant be arsed to do them but a non working speedo think thats something id sort out
so could be a reason to knock him down in price

I would like to know more about the sump pan extender and deeper oil pickup because as far as I'm aware they don't do one for the GTIR unless it's a custom job?
Sounds like a well spec'd car that does, good luck with it mate and I hope the car is what the guy says it is because on the face of it sounds like a decent R

Disappointed! The car was a bit of a nail,it was a bloody fast nail! He hadn't bothered cleaning it all, there's was rust on the arches and bottoms of the doors, and places, the interior was filthy, and generally looked like a run down pile! The engine bay was ok but there's was a couple oil leaks and oil was coming out of small air filter which I think is a breather for the top of the head ( think I'm right), not overly impressed, power wise it was fast! And felt solid! But the car just looked to much of a nail! I'm not expecting anything brand new, but I don't want something that looked like that did either!

Well you have owned one before mate so you know what to expect of one. I wouldn't settle for one that's not as nice as the one you had before or you will always feel as though it not good enough.

Personally I would rather by a good clean car and then spend a few grand on it getting it to the spec I want rather than settle for a bit of nail with half decent spec, at least if you find a good solid clean car to start with then it's worth keeping and spending money on over the years to come. That's my opinion anyway mate but I know we're your coming from looking for a car with good spec to start with because it will cost a fortune to build one from scratch lol

Sorry to here the car wasn't all that mate, hope you find a better one soon buddy

I just hope your old one wasn't that clean that you will never find another as good lol but that's my advice anyway, don't settle for one that's not good enough or you will regret it.
When I was younger my mum had a GTIR and it was a cracking car, my dad sold it and bought another one cheep through auction which on the face of it was as good as the other (my dad event tried to tell her it was better lol) but the second car was a nail! It was nothing but trouble and just always gave you the impression it was just a tired old nail that was ready to give up on you at any moment lol you don't want that!

Depends when you had your old car
My first couple of gtir's were bought in 1999 and 2000 and some of the cars that were getting imported were immaculate you would never find a car that good now
Unless it's a totally stripped and refreshed ect

Sorry to hear the car wasn't any good, I looked at so much crap, luckily I bought my old Pulsar back after almost 9 months of being away, although when I got it back the gearbox was very noisy and needed a clutch, but to be honest I can live with that as the car is a real gem, its for keeps now  Cool

I did think it was very well spec'd and personally thought £4100 was abit cheap (some may disagree) but as you said with the exterior probs etc price must reflect, i bought one with a ropey engine but solid shell, and built to the spec i wanted (not the cheapest way) but i know everything on the car is good and tight etc as i have done all myself, when stripping mine down guy before me had left engine mounts loose, gearbox wasn't bolted on tight and LOTS of bodges. Im sure you will look at a few before buying a good one seem to be quite hard to come by Smile

if in doubt then walk away pete as you did

normally your first impression is the correct one, there will be others come up but most will have some degree of rusting on rear arches, if they haven't then I would look at the car even more closely as it could have been lashed up just to sell

I would rather buy a genuine straight car that's not been blown over and tarted up to hide a multitude of sins, then a couple months down the road rust starts breaking through everywhere

Yes I don't expect to get a well spec'd minter, but at the end of the day I don't want to hand over 4 grand and look at a shed! There will be more, just gonna keep looking!

it was a very well spec'd car however i always think if someone can not be bothered to wash a car before you get there they clearly arent bothered Unless of course there is a vaild excuse. you will find as bob said alot with the rear arches going but there is a difference between a few bubbles and a rotten arch, but first impressions count for alot.
