Disconnect the tps and make sure the idle is under 1000rpm,get someone to slip.the clutch to get the idle down if you have to then set the timing.

Done that, ticking over at 948 rpm. Timing was on zero( second mark from the left) moved dizzy and watched it go up but ran out of movement at +10. Wondered it dizzy is on a spline and someone in the past has put it back one tooth out????

Is this with the throttle postion sensor disconnected aswell?

If so check the crank pulley and make sure the rubber on that is still in good shape ans not moved.

as above the outer ring on crank pulley may have moved a little which will give you false marks.
if the damper ring is all good and you can only reach 10 degrees then that means your engine timing is out a tooth so youll need to whip the rc off and check engine timing marks

dizzy is not on a wormdrive on these cars so itll only fit in one position, so you cant go wrong there

Is the outer ring a common problem and is it a renewable part or repairable??

yep its fairly common on them now
and no its not really repairable unfortunately and new ones from mr Nissan are £300 odd+

check it out properly by pulling on the outer ring and seeing if theres any movement if so then youll need a replacement
we flog them for £50 which are all ok but stocks are getting very low now

Can i use a tdi gauge to find top dead centre and mark the inner pulley then set my timing light to +20 and set timing like that?

Your right Jedi master,,, the outer ring does have some play in it. I've removed the two belts and the centre bolt to find the pulley has a whitworth key so obviously pulls off. Do I have to use a pulley extractor and do both the inner and outer pull lies come off together?

Im not sure im following what your saying .... the crankshaft pulley is meant to be one piece  it has a woodruff key  ....so you pull the whole piece in one ....is that what you meant darren ?

Yes I was close woodruff key whit worth key lol. Only beginners call em woodruff key lol. Your spot on with what I mean , does it require a puller?

theres 2 threaded bolt holes in pulley which you can use to pull the pulley off
however be very very carefull doing this as you can end up threading the bolts into the alloy pump housing which will then result in a major job if you damage that............so either put a thin bit of steel sheet behind where the bolts go through so it does not damage the casing or just spray the centre up with some wd and lightly lever it each side until it breaks loose
jut be carefull Wink

as above the whole pulley is one piece

Must read posts before hitting send. It should read £4.69 no wonder you thought it was expensive lol. As the outer wheel on the pulley was slipping a bit I've spot welded a small washer across the outer wheel and inner part so it can't move anymore, next I'll find TDC mark my pulley accordingly and set my strobe light to pluses 20. If the pulley runs ok I'll leave it but if there seems to be any vibration then I can revolve the small washer from under the wheel arch.
