dangerous dave wrote:Right after all this I have decided to leave the brakes as they are yes I know there shit but I don't want this car to end up like my red R.

This is how it started last time an before I knew it I had ripped a good standard car to bits so until I have a shell to build in to a monster I will be leaving my black R alone
I'm contemplating trying some uprated OEM size discs with them carbotech pads as I still have not done a track day. If they work well enough I'll sell the 2 sets of brake kits I've got.

I had the carbotech in my last R an they did the job an did it well enough for what I needed them for,

Shame I have the Evo calipers discs an pads but no use for them now.

Just have to wait for a project to come along.

i dunno what the standards are like so cant compare only to my missus 1.6 leon which has much better braking, guess it comes down to pads etc so prob be better with carbotechs

to be honest the standard brakes are nowhere near as bad as people say
possibly one of the best brake sets ups in a car when the car first came out
its when people started cuttings corners and upping the bhp that the brakes were a problem

Keeping on the topic of brakes.
I thought 17's were too big and 15's too small. But I wanted the best stopping power to fit under 16' rims.
Just about made it and 2 years later no rubbing.
The stopping power is amazing much better than the hi spec's I had on my old Sunny running 17' rims.
Result.

Tarox 10 pot calipers on 285 discs

Thanks for you input mate an am sure it's something I will look in too when the right car comes along as I prefer to run the R on 16s.

To recap on the Akebono 2 pots from like of evo1,2,3 , Galant, pajero.
They were a great low cost conversion that matched well to the standard R brake cylinder & servo capability.
It was possible find used calipers complete for as little as £40-£50
Pre grooved Discs could also be had at around £50 so base parts was a £100 possible.
Reality though with possible brake lines, new pads & spacers or disc machining was around £200.
Spacers though can be made from the old original discs face chopped out or 4x100pcd 4mm spacer machined or ground down to fit inner disc hat.
4x100pcd 4mm spacers not always that easy find but had them in the past for about £16 a pair although the free method of recycling your old discs saves money & delays.
You can also use the Evo disc which saves needing a spacer & also at 4mm less diameter gives better caliper hardware clearance over the clio discs unless machined down.
Done well they could match the budget 4 pots & was a perfect road car & light track upgrade. With carbotech pads they even more capable on track if needs be.
