Cars in bits but want to check the suspension is okay ..
What is the best way to check the strut tops ?
Is it worth stripping the struts?
Should i be able turn the strut tops when the struts are complete but removed from the car ?
or should they be tight?

Are there any servicable parts within the strut tops or any parts that can be greased up .

Sorry for all the questions but trying to trace an annoying clunk

What suspension do you have rob? if your holding the whole strut in one hand you should be able to turn the top hat as there is a flat bearing inbetween the top hat and cup im going on standard suspension think i may have a pic will see if i can dig it out for you fella.

Front ones will be hard to turn as they are under pressure

Rear ones are easier as they arnt under as much pressure.

Right maybe you need to grease or replace the bearing that on the top only way to check is to strip the top of the strut off. .. In the pic you see the silver piece with three studs on it then next to that is the black piece that sits on top the bearing should be between these to my strut was clonking every time i turned the wheel it turned out my bearing had disintergrated and the other side was not much better so had no choice other than to replace both if its hard to move id say its either dry of fooked mate.

Thats not so stu the tops shouldnt take much to move if the bearing in the top is ok as the pressure is against the rod not the top hat allowing it to move free otherwise the amount of pressure from the spring would just crush it before you even started to move anywhere.

Yes mate normal grease is ok. ... The bearing sort of looks like a big washer but it should move with ease if its ok its located where i said. ... If there fooked whatever you do dont go to nissan for them as they are like £24 pound each and have to order them in too.

How much effort should it take to spin strut tops once regreased ?

Should it be tight to spin or loose ?
One handed or two handed to make it move ?
Or should it be a one finger spin / move?

That shouldnt be to stiff to move aslong as they move mate i could move mine with one hand with hardly any pressure but like i said mine are brand new and yours probably had a few years of use so prob be a little bit stiffer natrauly.
