He was trying to fix a leak and fit a rocker cover gasket then unknowingly dropped a washer when removing the cover, bolted it back up and found another washer to use on the stud that was missing one.
At that point if he had searched for the missing washer he would have found it sitting on top of crank sprocket but just carried on then cranked engine over to start it.
The washer will then lift the chain off the sprocket as engine is cranked then leave the seen damage (worst one I've ever seen)
The valve springs were all still up but engine was locking if turned over by hand which is why we never fitted new rockers and shims to try start it which is a good job in retrospect.
So removed the head etc and found this unholy mess lol
The amazing thing is that there does not appear to be any damage to the Pistons, rods or anything on the bottom end :scratch:and if you look at the valve seats even they appear to be undamaged so will remove the broken valves and see what the valve guides are like, if alls good then may get away with fitting new valves, seals and so forth, however the timing chain and tensioner will have to be replaced as no doubt the chain has stretched
Extremely lucky
It's a note to all doing what should be a simple job of removing rc
REMOVE THE WASHERS before lifting the thing off
