Need to shim my head soon and it's getting quite noisy.

I'm going down the feeler gauge cutting out job route, but wondering if you guys can help me out with sourcing a good hole punch or tool for cutting them out - I just can't seem to find a decent heavy duty hole punch.

Anyone point me in the right direction of where to get???

Cheers guys.

I bought one of these - has to be the 5mm one.

I paid about £35 but it makes it really easy.

yeah thats what we use but could have sworn mine was the 6mm one which is a good tight fit for the shim pieces as you need to knock them in squarely with a little bolt.

when you do this do not use cheap feeler gauges use precision ones which are tempered and make sure the shim pieces fit squarely and tightly inside the shim.
also do not use less than 0.10mm thicknessers....if anything go oversize with them, as long as theres some clearance there you wont have a prob as the clearance will get bigger the hotter the engine gets.

also another guy had a good idea (which weve not tried yet which would work fine.
thats by first of all taking/measuring all the clearances and providing they are the same on either side of the rocker you can remove the pivotball which the rocker sits on and use a thicker shim/washer underneath it to take up the clearances.
was a good idea he came up with there whoever it was!

I'll check that size tonight - I'm probably wrong, the memory is not what it used to be...

One thing I would like to know is once you've pressed the shim in, how do you get it out again???

lol with great difficulty.
youll need one of those little hobby screwdriver kits from the £1 shop and try prising it round the edges.
or just go from 5th gear to 2nd flat out that should dislodge it Laughing

I think I'll go for the first option. Very Happy

And it's definitely the 6mm version that's needed.

Don't seem to be any cheap ones here at the moment but your local body shop is very likely to be able to lend you one.

Hi guys,

I built the head back up today and going to do the feeler blade method, mainly cost wise for the time being, can you recommend a decent set of feeler blades to use? Looked on flea bay and there all cheap ones, they may be ok but don't wanna poke them in then find there crap quality and spend an age trying to get them back out Laughing

Looked at these:

Demon are only a couple of miles up the road, if these will do the job I'll get some tomorrow..

Just found these tempered set:

There is a smaller set available for £21 I only need the 0.10 & 0.15 leaf so not too bad cost wise, will do for a few years Rolling Eyes

you want something that hardened tempered tool steel. You could inquire on spec of the sealey ones but most of their stuff is china made. Have a look at Mitutoyo as had a 28 blade set of them for around 20gbp if shop about, also try moore & wright or something german like ck .

edit, you beat me to it ...

I know this post is very old but I remove them by drilling a tiny hole in the middle and prising them out. There's a dimple in the middle of the bucket so go easy and you wont damage the shim.
