RA vs RB Gearbox

Well as some of you know I replaced my gearbox from the RB to a RA as I blew 3rd in the RB

Anyway took the car for a good drive tonight & I must say I realy am a lover of the RB box, its only downfall is long distance as your sat @ 70mph @4000RPM in 5th. But WOW what a difference that box makes to performance tho, The car was so snappy & aggressive with the RB box on

The RA that is on now is a lot more progressive with power delivery which is what you would expect but nowhere near as fun as the RB I know some people don't like the RB box, but all down to personal preference I suppose... I like my cars aggressive so it realy suited me & espeacialy with me living near windey country roads... I will miss it

Also its so laggy now with the RA box, where as boost was instant with the RB    But ive never drove another R with a RA box so I suppose I just need to get used to a different driving style with it!

But all in all The RA box feels good & smooth, cheers Bob

I've always said the RB box made the car go like an na car, as you say. No lag and fast and sharp through the gears.

It's a shame you are selling it if you like it so much!
Hold onto it and wait unt another broken box comes along.
It might take a long time but I'm sure something will come along one day.

Is there no way at all to get it rebuilt with out another box, no options at all

You could buy the gear from nissan. Not sure if you still can.
They were £200 but that was about 5 years ago.
Probs double now.

the only hope is to find somewhere that has the facilities to machine up a gear for you, it could be costly but can be done, russ on here I believe is in contact with someone regarding getting the rb gears machined up.

I still prefer the ra box, never really liked the rb as I think the ratios are too close, but each to their own I guess

It would be a dear do for that sort of box... Even tho its a fun box its still not storng, so £200 for the gear itself & 500 + for a builder to build it you nearly half way to a 2nd hand quaiffe

Like I say the RA probably is as good but im not used to it yet so just need to get used to a different driving style

maybe you need to adjust your avcr as it will be setup for different ratios

Ra is from the road going pulsar/sunny gtir  and the rb is the rally version/lightwieght pulsar it didnt have electric windows or air con  and thats where the rb box come from .

Gti-RA= alpha aka road car

Gti-RB = beta rally car

Is it the gear spacing you like or the fact everything is shorter?  What if we could have a shorter final drive made by mfactory?  

Pardon my lack of knowledge of awd drivetrains, but would it be as simple as having a custom made final drive like in fwd situation?  maybe go from a 4.125 final drive to a 4.5xx or 4.7xx?

It would seem like a cheaper alternative to get a quicker final drive, than a full tighter gearset.

The rolling radius is higher than standard so that means its geared higher, probably like most of our cars.

I.e standard rolling radius is approx 70.5",
With 205/45-17 radius is approx 76.2" - giving approx 8% increase
