apexi pfc uses knock sensor same as a stock ecu except it will not pull ignition out or pull back boost if knock is detected.
As Johnny rightly said knock detection will show up through engine management light flickering.
The knock function can be set or turned off completely through the mapping software if needs be but not really a good idea to do so.
