Every norning my car smokes for a couple of miles.
Im guessing its burning off oil that has seaped into the chambers over night?
It clears pretty quick and then all day theres no smoke at all.
Would it be valve seats or seals? Or both?
And is it a head off job?

Thanks.

Is it obvious blue smoke ?
worth taking plugs out when car been sat for a day plus & see if can see oil drips on tops of pistons . bore scope cameras are cheap these days too .
What turbo outlet pipes like for oil film ?
Valve seals can be done with head on by using compressed air or the old rope down plug hole trick to hold valve in place but best with head off if can as can check guides for wear/cracks etc & refresh seat, decoke & whatever else you fancy .
Would recommend genuine stem seals, others can be problematic & due to hassle fitting it one of those things you want right first time & for long time ...

Thanks for the reply MrB.
Yeah its grey smoke. I can just about see it when im driving in my rear view mirror. But if i pull off with higher revs i get a plume of smoke. But only once and its cleared.
I havent looked at the ic pipe i will try to have a look over the weekend.
I will buy ine of those cheap bore cameras too.

Was like it after the rebuild back in 2009
Breathers are all setup correct and the catchcan is.

I think you can also do valve seals by turning crank to tdc and doing valves on cyl 1 & 3 because they cant drop, turn crank and do cyl 2 & 4'

They still drop a bit, you basically do same with rope or air to cylinder by turning each cylinder over so it at tdc with valves closed., Air or cord keeps valves right up in situ making collet fitting possible.
Problem with doing with head on is can't inspect guides etc for issues same.
First thing do is find more evidence on source of smoke ...

I used the rope trick on an old 8v valve golf as i didn't want to take it off.

I have ordered a bore camera from hong kong lol when it arrives i will pull the plugs and scope to see if theres oil on the pistons...
I may just buy another head and strip and build it and then just swap them over..

I could be wrong, but I'd just leave it until to gets worse? Can't be that bad if the smoke clears up pretty quickly..

True Woody. Its been like it since 2009 lol i just keep checking oil levels and top up when needed.
I do a oil change regular too.
I will check it when the camera comes and then do a plan of action.
More than likely i will get another head and get it ready to swap over.

Should get idea without camera buy using a torch & looking at plugs too .
I would check things out further before deciding on action to take.
i would also stick with trying rebuild current head if evidence points to it being the issue unless you get chance of a particularly decent used one at a steal which you might being the midland deal hunter Smile

Lol im sure i will fi d a good deal on one Smile
Its easier for me to buy a head and sort it out first. Because then its only a days work to swap it over so my car isnt off the road Smile
I can rebuild the one that is in then and sell it on Smile

I now think the snoke may have been over fueling.
Reason i think this is..
I drove the car this morning. Parked it up all day. Came out to it this afternoon and it was running like a subaru. Did a fault code check to find afm fault code.
I have pulled the plugs and they were black.
So have cleaned them up.
I have looked down the bores and they are very wet so i have left the plugs out while that drys out before i try and start the car again.
Over the last week or two i have been having a miss fire every so often while driving and couldnt see why.
I guess it was over fueling.
I did notice my exhaust was black but put it down to installing a hks afr. I have now disconnected the hks afr so its back to the standard afm signal.
Will see how it goes over the next week to see if the smoke has stopped.

Funnily enough mine was the same Stu, over fueling massively when took her off the road.. When striping the engine all I could smell was fuel Shocked

Two things I did notice was a plug was corroded and one of the injectors looks blocked, wether on mine this had something to do with it or something else? Might be worth checking injectors to see if there performing correctly?

Yeah thats an idea mate.
Altho all seams okay atm.
Apart from the manifold has cracked again so the car isnt running right from that. Well atleast thats what i think is causing it to be running shit on low revs and idle.
I plan on changing the injectors so may just sort that out sooner than later.
