Hi,

Thought I'd have a quick look at the turbo this evening. Like most Turbos that have a few miles on them there's two small cracks on the wastegate face, opposite to each other:

Crack in turbo B21ED45D-74FF-48CE-B63F-DF46C7C9CB52_zpsae2og2h2

Crack in turbo 4A9C7339-C05D-47A2-9AED-FE6989A03751_zpshfhl8op4

Will I get away with using this?  The baby's due mid May and ideally would like car back on road before, as money's tight now I'm only going to do the bare essentials to the engine, then lob it back in.  Looking to take it back out in a few years time when I have money and time.

I was going to order a new CHRA, but on closer inspection there's very little play in the shaft so should have a few years more fun in it.

Actuator arm circlip had rotted away, literally just pushed the rod and it popped off Laughing

Oh and when I last had it off 9 years ago I forgot to tighten 3 manifold nuts and 2 elbow nuts Laughing finger tight!

Gaz

I would say it is fine. If money is tight and your doing it yourself its only a couple of hours if you find the have boost creap or anything and need to take it off.

Although I very much doubt you will have any problems with it at all.

Just out of interest had the turbo been off it that long or had it been turned over etc? Sometimes if it hasnt been used in years the oil seals can deteriorate. Worst case is fit it and it smokes, best case its fine either way its only a few extra hours work if it is bad and at least you tried it out.

Maybe try and drop some oil inside (not the water side lol) might help by pre charging it if its quite dry.

Nice one Shroom will give that a go.

If I replace the seals will I have to get it balanced again? Reading through this link

He's marked the compressor wheel to line back up....

Yes you have to get it balanced. It spins at high rpm and any deviation and it will wear out quickly. Buy a rebuild kit off turborebuilds.co.uk for a standard kit or 360 kit is 60. Balancing from the same place is 45quid i think, its on my ebay watch list

Most turbos Iv seen have minor cracks there and there's been many posts like your asking bud there been fine, I'd drop a small amount of oil down the bores and turn it over by hand, replace the oil then disconnect the distribiter cap then turn the engine over and get good oil pressure if you can put a little oil in the oil feel pipe to the turbo to prime it
If you want to rebuild the turbo just record it do not do it yourself bud
