Just took the gtir out for a quick drive. All of a sudden misfire lots of smoke from exhaust no power. More throttle I gave it more smoke. Come to stop at petrol stations and clouds of smoke.
What's gone wrong. What can I check. Looked around engine bay and all looks ok.

Is it able to still drive now?
Turbo, piston?
What colour is the smoke?

You have a top mount right so can only be 2 boost pipes if it was a boost pipe that had blown off.
Did you look at the turbo as Stu pointed out you had a loose or missing turbo pipe bolt.
Check also the rad cap, is it still there?

Just can't trust anything on eBay these days..Sorry hope it gets sorted.
Deffo going to look into importing a Gtir instead now.
Happening too many times to the eBay shite.

It's hard to tell colour of smoke looks blue ish. Turbo pipes are all on so is radiator cap.
If it was turbo seals would I loose power and sound like misfire. It bangs constantly now when it's smoking.

Blue is usually turbo mate.
But I don't think it should bang or misfire.
Plugs, leads, dizzy.
Was is raining heavy in your area today or over the last few days?.
Do you have the spark plug cover under the top mount?

Have a good check over boost pipes for blown off or tears .... check  turbo intake pipe for signs of oil take the plugs out check they all look the same and not oiley. If your not sure post a pic up ...also check rotor arm and dizzy cap check the rotor arm isnt loose .... if all good i would be inclined to do a comp test anyway ....

Were you thrashing it when it happened? Are you sure its blue smoke?

there is a lot of smoke its whitish / blue its very hard to tell. Looked at both inlet pipes as these are for the TMIC and cannot see any tears. The dump valve has some oil coming out of it.

IF turbo seals had gone would i have no power and major loss in power. Didnt go above 2k rpm to get the car in safe place and it was popping and banging lots.

Got AA man coming in next two hours to see if he can figure it out but very much doubt he will do a compression test as it will require the TMIC coming off.

Any more information you guys have got.

Checked the Dip stick stick loads of oil on the stick no signs of cloudlyness that you would get when the coolant mixes with the oil.

No turbo seals wouldn't cause loss of power and popping and banging and you they wouldn't go just like that, usually go gradually and you would get puffs of blue smoke after gear change. Is there any knocking or rattling or banging coming from the engine? And where are you location wise?

didnt hit the limiter but did drive it very hard for around 3 minutes.

Just moved the car into a light area and lots of white smoke. doesnt seem like its blue smoke but lots of white smoke.

Also took the intercoooler pipe off and there is a thin layer of oil on the inside of the pipe but i wouldnt class it excessive.

Check the plug on the afm.
But it does sound like the intercooler pipes have popped off.
Can you explain more about how it happened. What you was doing at the time? Full boost etc?

I was thinking the same as Johnny, what revs did you hit? did this happen at high revs? Did you miss shift into the wrong gear?

Took the other side of the intercooler pipe off and there is lots of oil in it. See picture below.

Doesn't look good Sad
You need to do a compression test.
Possible ringlands failure.

fook me 8k?! Wouldn't be surprised if you snapped a rocker or 2 and the broken bits have got down the bores and damaged piston and or valves etc, could have even jammed the cams open and piston hit the valve. Take the rocker cover off first and post a pic if you don't know what to look for.

well maybe just before 8k but it didnt hit the rev limit. and the red line starts at 7.5k then goes up. it might of been 7.5k tbh.

Yes as aron says could have thrown rockers or have cracked a ringland on a piston

Is the car at idle or partial throttle feel like it's only running on 2or3 cylinders?
If so then remove the spark plugs first then compression test engine and post up your results
If there is one cylinder down on compression put a spoonful of oil down the plug hole of that cylinder and do the test again
If compression then rises in line with the others then it will be ringlands have cracked, if no change then chances are you have thrown the rocker off the pivot which will cause damage to head and piston unless you are very lucky. But you will need to remove rocker cover to investigate damage that's been caused

Thanks for your replies. It sounds like it's missing on idle.  The aa bloke came and took the air filter pipe off turbo and was full with oil. Like loads.
It looked like it had used a hell of a lot of oil from before as well.

On worst case scenario how much is a new sr20 without gearbox

Drop me a pm joe or give me a bell tomorrow ideally, our numbers plastered all over GTI-R US website

Il run through a few tests with you so you can determine what damage is, even if it's done a ringland it's possible to fix it with engine in situ.
