another major gearbox fail

just pulled this apart today and another epic fail lol

this one has actually snapped the layshaft in half
funny thing is the bearings on the end all look to be ok even though the end casing has cracked open
3rd gear looks like its exploded and took virtually all the other gears out with it, only one working was reverse

a guy whos just bought one from someone on ebay
had it in last week and renewed box, clutch was also torn apart so needed that doing too

Blimey .... chemical metal is the way forward ....standard box then looking at the gears ???

Safe to say he was launching it?

it needs a couple of self tappers to put that back together, chemical metal alone will not work

Thats the way to go, cable ties are awsome. They also work on the mrs. She lets me do anything when they are around her wrist. Also duck tape is good helps keep noise down

In this case would a gearbox brace or some of the other options prevented/ helped this from occurring maybe?

its hard to say what the initial failure was due to the amount of damage caused (yet no apparent bearing damage either on the diff bearings or those on the shafts)

at a guess I would say 3rd gear had a nasty fracture then just let go and maybe a portion of the gear got jammed across a gear or something on the other shaft which put excessive pressure on the mainshaft causing it to shear in the middle.

baring in mind the guys only just had the car a short time its possible that what he says is true and he may have been under light load in 3rd and the gear finally let go.
but without doubt this car has been well abused in the past and launched a fair few times due to the state of the diff (cooked) and the clutch pressure plate, driveplate (springs hanging out) and badly blued flywheel.
just something you would not have known when purchasing as may well have driven fine prior, so just bad luck really.

with regard to a brace helping it...........no, it wouldn't have made a scrap of difference in this case

So what's opinions about this CNC machined plate that's meant to cure the remaining weak point on the GTI-R case. Saw it this morning but I don't have Facebook so can't read the comments. 

Is this supposed to do the same job as fiber glassing the end case?

It's meant to be used with a Tilton Hydraulic release bearing so I'm a little confused about what problem it's solving 

This is for bellhousing end & as once you braced other end the next case weak spot is the bearing wells bellhousing end.
You can weld a plate in but it minimal effort with standard release arm as simply not much room, switching to a hydraulic release bearing gives a lot of room to do do something. Not many going need it but if similar had been done years back few of the proper big power cars could of done better at drag events & earned car more respect.
