its hard to say what the initial failure was due to the amount of damage caused (yet no apparent bearing damage either on the diff bearings or those on the shafts)
at a guess I would say 3rd gear had a nasty fracture then just let go and maybe a portion of the gear got jammed across a gear or something on the other shaft which put excessive pressure on the mainshaft causing it to shear in the middle.
baring in mind the guys only just had the car a short time its possible that what he says is true and he may have been under light load in 3rd and the gear finally let go.
but without doubt this car has been well abused in the past and launched a fair few times due to the state of the diff (cooked) and the clutch pressure plate, driveplate (springs hanging out) and badly blued flywheel.
just something you would not have known when purchasing as may well have driven fine prior, so just bad luck really.
with regard to a brace helping it...........no, it wouldn't have made a scrap of difference in this case
