I've been practicing welding with mig for years and I'm still shit at it 
But been practicing tig more recently and I'm even worst at that so my mig welding looks good in comparison haha

Certainly skill involved, I want to buy a tig aswell LOL

Use a bright light next to where your working ... that will brighten the mask up when your welding ....

Ill give that a go, thanks mate, I was welding in the garage which is kinda dark even with the lights on.

So does a grinder and paint but that takes more effort

A grinder is the key to any puzzle .....

Dont worry woody some of the welding when i started was shocking .... wait till you start welding onto shit thin old panels thats when the challenge begins lol ...

I burnt out a car and set fire to the house when i was 17, i will always remember that day haha

Hey guys, as Im running a same side intercooler Im welding in a new section of steel behind the drivers side headlight where the intercooler used to run through.

Im having real problems with blow through, my welders lowest setting is 40 amps so im guessing its still too hot. However since i'm a completely novice welder is there anything I can do better with technique that will help me with this problem?

Im still running flux wire btw, if I shift to a gas mix will it make the weld a little cooler?

argonshield gas is probably better on thin body stuff. cab be tricky at 40amp, good clean edges helps & stop start technique so heat doesn't build up so much, also be sure you seeing well enough as if mask lens too dark you don't see enough of the weld action to judge problems.
My welder goes down to 30amp & I still struggle on some thin sheet in unfavorable positions. I done a SG forester rear inner splash guard arch & metal on that panel is bloody thin (hence why gone bad) & even a perfect clean join was a struggle without virtually stop start tack weld type technique, i'm no pro welder though :-P Have a friend who has quite a cheap gasless mig & he done some real neat fabrication stuff with it so some if it defo down to us users :-(

What metal are you actually welding .... are you welding onto the inner wing ? .... if your burning through it .... try not to stay in the same spot too long ... you want to almost tack it in so to speak so like weld one spot for a couple of seconds then move on further along the piece wich keeps the heat down in one specific spot wich helps stop blowing holes in it ... sometimes metal is so thing its a nightmare ive had issues similar but all you can do is buzz it quick then move on .... also check your weld pool as your doing it as you may be lingering in one spot too long before flowing it ...

The technique Ive been using is tack one corner, tack the opposite corner to try and reduce the heat. Maybe ill try shorter bursts and see how that goes. Ill post some photos tomorrow and see what you guys think. I think I really need to get a gas set-up though, using flux gets annoys in difficult positions.

Flux seems to get hot quick ... trouble is if the metal is thin it will wont take long to burn a hole through so you have to move quick with it .... pist a few pics up woody so we can see ...

Move your gun a bit further away when tacking, that's what I did when welding panels, obviously not too far so you don't get penetration. I'm sure shroom will have a comment to the last bit

Its been over a week since Ive touched it so need to clean it up before starting again.

Notice that right side is a bloody mess. I was getting blow through and then I struggled to fill the holes in without making it worse.

I found in that area when doing mine, rust had made the steel very thin, soon as I started tacking it was like burning paper, so cut more away

Yours look mint, that's how mine needs to look.

Cut back to the best metal, then just moved around tacking until it was all done, a few bits still blew through but pulled gun back a bit to fill the hole in.

I was using argon shield which made a difference and get a flatter weld. This was one of the last bits I'd welded so was getting used to the piss thin Nissan steel

Thanks mate, I thought the metal was all good but Ill take another look. Might be the best option
