crank pulley timing marks

Theres No timing markings on my alloy crank pulley.
I need to get my piston up to tdc.
So that I can check the cam timing.
Anyone got any idea of how I can do it?

Remove no.1 plug .. stick a bloody long screwdriver down and rest it on piston .. turn engine over by hand until screwdriver stops moving up. .

I did this last week and was told I need to do it by the crank pulley to get it more accurate to check the cam timing..
