Had my R down at Bob's last week for some power and torque upgrades and I must say, I couldn't be happier with how the car feels now compared to how it was before it went in. She pulls so much better and more freely now that I really didn't want to get out of the car after the drive home!
Speaking to Bob, he really knows the cars well and is a wealth of information on which upgrades to make for your desired level of performance and how to go about achieving it for the best price. On top of that, he and his team are really welcoming and his enthusiasm for the old Rs is second to none. On the way there in fact, the dump valve died on me and the engine was not holding idle, so I had to nurse the car by keeping the revs up and left foot braking practically all the way there. But within 5 mins after reaching Bob's place, he popped the bonnet and identified the problem, and then took it for a short test drive before checking the cylinder compressions and the spark brothers for the dyno run I had asked for following the planned upgrades.
From the spec I had before, I reckon the car was running around 310 bhp but it always felt like it was holding a lot back (evidenced by the fact that I managed only a 14 sec quarter at Santa Pod last summer), something that Bob also noticed on the test drive. But as the post-upgrades dyno result in the video below shows, hopefully I'll be able to hit much better times now:
The final torque figure would have been higher except the Mine's ECU I'm running doesn't allow it to go much further, but it does allow for a steeper and flatter curve at the top rather than letting it drop off sooner (as the standard ECU would do), so I may just stick with it for now. Oh, and all I'm running is a stage 1 T28 turbo with the standard injectors and MAF.
Hope to see you again soon some time and thanks a bunch Bob!
