Most compressors use AC motors with a big capacitor on them, and it's the capacitor which usually blows up and smokes a lot.
A new capacitor will cost about £10.

It was 50 Litre V Twin 14.6CFM 3HP (cfm might be wrong not sure) and it was keeping up with my die grinder it ideal size for my garage etc cheapest (new one) i can find is around 160 quid... But tbh depending on price if it would be bigger I won't moan Very Happy

That's what I'm looking at

Keep the old receiver from your dead compressor and connect it into your next one for more volume Wink

That is a good trick, have a friend who likes floor space and low cost & he sourced 2 used 60ltr tanks and mounted on a steel framed shelf right up at ceiling height with motors etc next to it & fittings/drain valve running down wall. runs 2 2hp motors/pumps feeding tanks, ran my Fore impact gun at 110psi easily and sprays nicely too .
We wire up an old car fan or mains fan to assist motor/pump cooling/air circulation and prolong life, makes a massive difference ...
I added second tank to mine and built small block shed onto back wall of workshop for compressor & bit of extra dry storage space for parts, metal stock & waste fluids etc, nice and quiet when out of garage too :-) those v twin motors are quite good, 14.5cfm+ is a must really and more so if planning on long tool run times compared to 15second blasts of a 1/2" impact gun .

Long story short I've bought this one
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121700762724?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Just got pissed off with looking for any decent 2nd hand one and waiting till end of auctions + possibility of fetching it from Aberdeen....
I'd keep my old tank but I haven't got much space + I'm still renting. So next week I've got another head porting jobby we'll se how it goes...

never been a fan of direct drive compressors. Die grinders consume fair bit of air and as tend use them for long run times works smaller compressors hard. Most of these type compressors have a low duty cycle too but they shy add that in technical details, is cheap enough though ...

It's 14cmf or whatever the unit was... i know this will be noisy as hell but like you've said cheap enough

yeh it 14cfm but FAD or run time duty cycle not mention .
I would guess FAD would be 7 to 8cfm, FAD or SCFM are better numbers to judge compressors.
I would have a fan to help cool air flow across motor & pump as can prolong life massively.
Price is indeed cheap, would not get much new here for that money and certainly not delivered to door as well, if motor dies you maybe able pull the v pump & build a belt drive one from the parts . Linking 2 together laid out to your preference and using a time delay relay of few seconds for second motor start would produce quite a cool compact home use compressor with a FAD of easily 14+cfm at sensible cost .
Think you be working that one hard for porting work .
Do a review on it once had a while in tool section .

Yep, real world use test is the best .
Pretty much same direct drive compressor as see under other brand badges for 180 & £200
Tank size doesn't play a massive role as that just stored air and ideally it to give compressor off duty time, but if tools on very long periods a small output pump unit still going be running long cycles and as the unit gets hot the output efficiency drops a lot so don't make rated cfm.
Hope it works out good, if is quite good is smart buy as if want bigger later on just buy another for custom twin motor twin v 4 pot. 2 of those for like £320 with working figures around 24cfm & true FAD of 14+cfm would be cool, I want buy 2 just to play with as making me exited and want see how good it could be for cost ...
