1Need HELP Diagnosing an Issue Empty Need HELP Diagnosing an Issue 1st June 2016, 3:42 pm

So far the GTI-R has been a blast to own and drive. It actually reminds me (maintenance wise) of my E39A Galant VR4, a car that was a labour of love, but when she ran great man did it put a smile on your face.

On to my issue.

Car was seemingly running fine until a couple of preface's, not sure if either have anything to do with issue:

1) Battery Died...Jumped battery, car ran fine.

2) Ran her hard one evening, and this is where the issue arrises.

In nuetral the car will idle perfectly, rev fine, but once engaged in gear, it putters along and has issues getting power past 2.7k-3k RPM, similar symptoms to if there were an I/C pipe off. Bogs at 3k RPMS and loses power.

I dont have access to CONSULT, so I have basically been throwing parts at it with no luck. I have changed the following:

Spark Plugs
Fuel Filter
MAF Sensor

When I changed the fuel filter, it had ALOT of dirty bits inside, but this still seemed to change nothing with my issue. Was thinking fuel pump possibly? or CAP?

Any help is appreciated.

Cheers

Consult doesnt work on these cars.

Do the fault code check.

Is the abs light on or battery light?

Battery is in standard location under the bonnet, what piece are you referring to?

Check your afm plug is on tight. Also take it off and see if it is clean.
Symptoms indicate afm fault or dirty so maybe get some electrical cleaner and clean the element inside the afm.

Its where it joins into each other i remember  another member having an issue  where it would idle and rev fine  stationary but as soon as he would get going it would play up similar to what your saying  it turned out to be a loose connection in the joint just old and brittle .... it may not be the cause but a free and easy check .....also afm plug if its loose while driving .... has it got the clip on it ????

If the AFM plug you're referring to is the one that connects the MAF, then no it doesn't have the metal clip, would that really make a big difference?

Yes that would make a big difference. You will find the vibrations of the engine will casuse it to give false readings...

Tried the paper clip on the AFM, car will go above 3k but lose power at 4K. Also now the fuel gauge is reading empty though I have a half tank?

You got a earthing problem or loose battery connection and fuel pump etc not getting good voltage due to poor earth

Welp,

After days of frustration, I decided to clean the CAP (it had a tiny bit of rust on the connecting points), and out of frustration I replaced the new MAF with the old one, and the put the old leads back in, and voila, she works just as she did when I got her, the only other thing that I can think of that may have made a difference is the paperclip mod on the AFM. So as I am not entirely sure what the EXACT issue was, it seems to be running fine.

Thanks to everyone for your assistance!

Consult has been available for GTIR since the day the car was made. Same as 300zx and any other Nissan with grey 14pin plug in the fuse box, it is what the guys in the Nissan garages use.

Looks like this (this is actually consult-II but consult-I looks the same):

I make modern usb/bluetooth/windows/android version, works very well and you can read my mission here:

If you want one let me know...

Cheers,
Adam
