I have had a crankshaft in the engineers with marks on the main journals and a spun rod bearing and he said after a .25 grind it still had marks so he has ground it to .50 on both the mains and the bigend journals?

Question is can you get .50 bearings for the GTiR as I'm struggling to find any?

Will there be any downside to grinding the crank to .50?

All advice welcome cheers

Main bearings will be fine with a .50 grind as bearings are under no real loading as such unlike bigend bearings

The nitrided surface on most of these cranks goes to around .25 to .30 so once ground beyond that you will lose the hardened surface.
Personaly I would not use a crank ground to .50 on bigend journals unless it was a naturally aspirated engine with a linear loading.

Tried this once before on a close to 350bhp car and it did not last to long, I've seen a few failures on cranks ground beyond the .25 so if I'm honest it's a risky game your playing there spike

Why is machinist grinding crank when not even seen bearing options.
My machinist won't grind till got set of bearing & does a install of bearings in block & uses bore gauge to measure bearing bore as a first step to spec his grind measurements, doing that & measuring to 3 decimal places helps get clearance in far better ranges.
decent used or new crank would be good, new is about 650GBP if you smile but someone friendly with Nissan parts might get that lower. .25 grinds are no bother but get someone real good to do it.

Crankshaft part# is 1220054C05
£800 is worse case scenario without a friendly parts man. Got a few people on here working at Nissan or with friendly parts source that should be able help on prices on chunky purchases like this.

I've had under 700 & reckon someone with good contacts will get under 600.
Nissan pile it on, markup is immense. Don't help in UK with current vat rate though :-S

^ Was some time ago, I always try various nissan dealers & other suppliers & see what results get then work on couple of best prices & see if get down more, prices vary a lot from dealers as some will automatically add trade discounts etc at different rates while other stiff you with blatant robbery.
Also depends on stock, if Nissan UK/Europe do have some floating about they may be keen shift them & lower price, if got go on order from Japan then probably less flex in the pricing :-/
20%vat is just crazy on stuff like this, car parts, building material, tools etc should be in a lower bracket :-/

I havent done it personally I work for the local council IT and they were emailing arounf for poling clerks to help out and that was what they would pay use for the day although it is 7am to 10pm but all you do is stand there and smile.

We just have the welsh and scotish crying poverty and its going to be nice and fragmented with no real winner and some dodgy coalition were they can then just go back on all their promises and do what they want lol.

As you said we should count ourselves lucky as some places are a whole lot worse!
