My heads are a bit dim and at the weekend just walking around a diy shop I saw some bulbs 55/100w and 80/100w and the only thing that stopped me buying them is I wondered if the extra heat would effect the reflectors as there not great as it is, any ideas chaps

I would be more worried about the extra amperage on your headlight wiring especially on a 20+ year old car.

I had an issue on one side of mine a while ago, I opened up the plug that goes on the bulb and it was corroded. I replaced both sides and it made a fair difference.

I'm running those bulbs (80/100) for last 5 years and only problem was melted plug so I've fitted ceramic ones... Only thing is they are not road legal for some reason but will pass mot as there is no chance of checking them (or even telling the difference lol )

Yeah my plug had melted slightly but more due to the heat build up from the corrosion I suspect.

If particularly bad you would be better trying to get decent used or new. bit of a pain opening & resealing.
I've used 80/100w pretty much since had mine as it one of the first things I do as hate poor lights & hate HID kits due to road legality & fact so easy spotted. Just check connectors & replace if bad otherwise clean up with electrical contact spray.
You could also try some high tech piaa bulbs perhaps > http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SALE-PIAA-H4-CHROME-MIRROR-WHITE-HEADLIGHT-BULBS-4100K-130-120w-OUTPUT-H-352E-/311342798993?
Or Philips X-tremeVision +130% > http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Philips-X-TremeVision-130-H4-12V-60-55W-Spotlight-lamps-/331377594604?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item4d27a4d0ec

Well that's good to know, I didn't think it worth the risk on our old looms but if others have had no issues I may consider upgrading them again.

If the bulb plug is scabby then best replaced.
Power wise 100W only 8-9amp load and 7-8amp engine running(13.2V+) so standard cable no issue really it just normally the front plugs scabby & not changed so then play up.
Do a voltage drop test & also measure feed voltage with engine running. wiring on these older jap cars has good 60% extra capability & still retain good safety margin.
Normally only issue is the standard H3 plugs corroded, sometimes earth maybe poor but that easy cleaned or renewed.
Solder, heat sleeve & tape wrap these ceramic with rubber outer weather boot ones on & should be good to go without issue >

* If wanting do rewire do it properly & that mean separate left & right circuit & top quality relays & soldered fitting.

I noticed on mine the earth lead in the plug had overheated & caused melting. I assumed it was ancient wiring with higher resistance? They are rewired now.Anybody seen the latest Cree led headlight bulbs with built in fan cooling that are widely available (on eBay!) I'm tempted as my Cree led bicycle lights are awesome.

Simply fit a relay and 12v feed easy done tuck wire neat. Don't matter if battery in front or rear as joint should still be in engine bay where cables feed to rear battery. This way you can re earth and before you fit brighter bulbs I gaurentee brighter lights then I recomend higher bulbs as mentioned
