theres a joint about half way along and someones stufed a few long bolts through it id try put a picture up but i dont have the right software

Well they are but unlike yours mine are Retro fit they either stripped the thread or snapped them off then drilled through the head and I've got nuts and bolts running through Nylocks

If it is the NSF shaft and it's the six M8 bolts that hold the shaft into the flange that you are talking about, you have either got to re-thread the flange or replace it, as the flange is part of the shaft that sits in the transfer box not sure if that is an easy job, maybe someone on here can give some more info.
If there is enough clearance nut and bolting together fundamentaly it should be OK, especially if the only other option is to replace the complete shaft, just ensure they are a high grade bolt.
I would be good to see some pictures !
