Might be a stupid question but is there a gasket of some sort between the oil pick up and oil pump

There's a o ring between the pick up and pump.

yes as above o ring or you can now buy gaskets with a pressed bit that goes wher o ring is

that was just first one I found not saying its the exact one. not sure weather this one kees the rubber o ring as well. a lot just use rubber o ring and a tiny bit of sealer

Gasket in link is for flat machined flange type not the O-ring groove type flange strainer.
Just use OEM O-ring ...
