All I know is the R will seem cheap to one of these if you get any real problems. If I see my boat friend this week ill ask him for some info Rob.

Never owned a speedboat as such but had 4 cabin cruisers in the past and like Pete said they are a big hole that needs filling with money if you have any troubles (which you will)

Check the hull for osmosis as it's cancer to a fg boat
If it's running an outboard then parts for these are unbelievably expensive so if I were you I would go for an inboard lump with z drive leg
If your in doubt with anything then pay someone who knows about boats to check it over, will be well worth that as you really don't want to buy something that has hidden troubles as it will cost you dearlly

I know a little as my boss has a speedboat i have worked on it .... rebuilt the engine 5.7 chevvy ... rebuilt the leg ... the list goes on salt water absolutley destroys the engine ... best advice i could give you is if you fancy a boat hire one i garuntee that hiring one over the year would still be cheaper than buying one plus if it goes wrong its not your problem .... parts for boats are piss take prices honestly rob save yourself the ball ache mate i sure most would agree who have owned boats ...

i know a few people who have boats(not speedboats mind)but cant imagine there is a great deal of difference overall.
its like everything else really car, boat or plane if its maintained and cleaned regularly there should be no issues with it
my brother had a boat for years think he might still have one.he had it moored up for about 9 months of the year and over some of the winter it was on a trailer outside my parents house.slept in it once was i was too drunk to work out how to open the house door

yeah the engine is marinised as salt water pumps through manifold (heat exchanger)
slightly different setups on different lumps but same principal applies

I still say go for an inboard as like you say its an engine at end of the day and parts will be cheaper with regard to the engine
buy an outboard like mercury ect and every single component youll need to dig deep for...........scandalous prices
