Good to see you all again. Got back OK so now I've got 85 miles on the rebuilt engine with no problems. I also discovered that it's not the temp gauge that doesn't work, it's the thermostat. It must be stuck open (or I forgot to put it in when I rebuilt the engine ) and with the cold air the engine never gets up to temp.

Thats not good john, wont the ecu make it run rich if its not getting up to temperature?

Yes, looking at the way the fuel gauge was dropping it probably was a bit rich. As it was the first time out for the engine I was taking it easy anyway so didn't really notice.
When the rain stops I'll have a better look.

Not good john but at least its not a sensor/wiring issue. And must say I'm still really impressed with how quiet the engine is, you've done a really good job.
