What kind of reading should I be seeing on the oil preasure gauge?

When I first start the car from cold the oil preasure will go up somewhere between 4 and 6 on the gauge then when the car is warmed up it will drop to between 2 and 4 but sometimes I've noticed it's below 2 when it's warm and I've been driving slow or sat at traffic lights. When I put my foot down the oil preasure goes as high as 6 on the gauge.

Does this sound normal? I've never had a car with an oil preasure gauge so it's not something I have ever monitored in a car before.

Yeah that's sounds about right. When sitting in traffic the oil gets quite hot and thins a bit which lowers pressure.

That's ok then, I've been panicking abit when I see it drop off below 2 but it increases when I rev the car so i thought it was ok, just thought I'd ask to make sure, I don't want to kill my new engine from oil starvation

It shouldn't go much below 2, don't think I've ever had mine up to 6 though, most I think was 5 but you will get slight differences between cars depending on type/viscosity of oil and general wear etc

It never really goes much below 2, the lowest it goes is just below 2 but tonight I noticed at one point when sitting at the lights after driving slow for a while it was a little bit lower than I had ever seen it but it came back up when I put my foot down.

Ill have to keep an eye on it. I suppose those standard gauges are not the most accurate things in the world either

The oil I'm using is the expensive millers nanotech stuff rated at 10w50, seems to keep the oil temp nice and low Smile

Yes, at a very hot idle (e.g. after a track session) my oil pressure will sit about 1.2-1.5 bar. On a cold idle it will be more like 6 bar:

And when the car is singing at full boost, its probably between 7-8 bar.

Totally normal.

Dave

the orginal gauges are not the best after nearly 20 years, always best to put a new one in and sensor as this topic has been up many times. if the gauge is working on start up should rise up to 6 then as warming up should sit at around 2 on idle going to around four with hard driving but these are rough guides and as said the gauges are gettin gold Wink

Just remember to check your oil every few runs. I am checking mine every 2nd tankful.

The pressure can be sitting fine but that doesnt determine oil level. I have been just over 2 but the dipstick is clean lol
