Spray Guns

I was looking at buying a spray gun to do some body repairs. Any recommendations? What sort of price range should I be looking at? There would have to be a difference between cheaper and expensive models? I was also going to get an adjustable air regulator for the bottom of the gun.

Think you also need something that filters water out?

You most defo need a water trap and regulator on the compressor before your hose/line .... some guns come with a mini regulator that goes between the line and the gun ..... then you have to look at the size of your compressor and cfm as to what gun you can use .... some guns are very air thirsty ... i went for a gravity fed lvlp spray gun as i only have a small 50l compressor producing 8cfm ....

Yeah I'll have to get water trap. I was doing some reading and apprently the mini regulator between the gun and hose is a good idea so you know the exact pressure at the gun. I think my compressor is about 6cfm but I would need to check. That's pretty low though isn't it?

Devilbiss are good or so I have heard not sure what I had brought it local cost about £120 does a reasonable job but havent used it in years after my cousin borrowed it to spray his 200sx orange and forgot to clean it

Devilbiss and sata are top names but expect to be paying around 200-300 for a gun .... it all depends what paint your using if your blowing in small areas you can get mini guns also ... and remember the pressure of the gun you using is when the trigger is open ..... you can get mid range guns with good reviews for 50 -100 .... its one of the those things if you will use it a few times is it worth spending big money .... i like the top fed gravity guns check out devilbiss gti pro ... they reckon its the best straight out the box pro finish for even the novice ....

I mght have a look at some mid range guns, I never knew how expensive some of them were. However if there is benefit in spending more money to get superior finish, it's worth it in the long run.

What tip size is better? 1.3mm/ 1.8mm/ 2mm? From reading it depends on the type of paint aswell some of the guns comes with multiple tips by the look of them. Guess I would be wanting to do primer, base and clear coats in the future.

Size tip depends on what paint .... so like say your doing primer you will want a larger tip and basecoat tend to be less.... but like i say it really depends on what paint your be using ... like 2pack or cellulose or water based etc ....

I would think your compressor would be more be more than 6cfm then mate ....

Hmm I'm not sure, I just went to a conversion site and 170L/M is 6.0034cfm

That number is right.

1 cubic foot per minute (cu ft/min) of flow rate = 0.47 Liters per second (L/sec)
0.47 Liters per second (L/sec) x 60 (sec) = 28.2 Liters per minute (L/min)
28.2 Liters per minute (L/min) x (cfm) i.e. 6 = 169.2 Liters per minute (L/min)

so, 6 CFM (cubit foot per minute) = 170 L/min (Liters per minute)

Should still be enough to power a gun .... i can on my 50ltr 1.5hp compressor .... its not so bad if your doing panels as you can let it build up before you start on the next one .... i manged to spray a whole van with mine ... i only had to stop once to let it build up so you should be fine woody ....

Thanks Leighton, hopefully it's fine. May aswell start getting some stuff to use a spray gun, will be a lot better in the long run. Gives me something new to learn your job on the van looked like it turned out pretty sweet from the pics

that's more than sufficient to run most guns as Leighton has said

Don't know if you've bought one yet but if not I recently bought a twin gun package and the gun quality is excellent for the money which I think was £60, you get 2 guns (ones a touch up gun) spare needles and other bits all in a case

only sprayed a few bits with it (not a complete car yet) but would have no issues in doing so, the gun is far better than my old devilbis gun which at the time I paid a lot of money for

Thanks bob that would be great. It's good to know a cheaper gun that produces good quality. Devilbiss Guns can get very expensive. I think I'm just going to spray can my small repairs for moment with longer term of getting all the spray gun bits and doing the whole car.

If you need more of a backup supply of air keep an eye out for old knackeres compressors then link the tanks. It wont really improve your CFM just stores more air. Im waiting on one myself...
