hi guys my pulsar has a front mount intercooler uprated fuel pump and a cone intake filter... apart from that the car i totally standard and running standard boost touch wood lol running fine.. my question is i read you can join up the boost solinoid to run 1 bar? is it safe to do this without doing other things first ie with ecu gaskets etc thanks tony

I think the 1 bar loop is a bit of a fable it doesnt tend to actually give you 1 bar very often (well from my experiance) it can increase it a little.

People used to run 1 bar and say it was ok as the ecu can supposedly re adjust but now I might suggest it would be better to save up and if you do want to up the boost get the car checked and mapped to suite as who knows what its doing really. I guess a wideband may help if you get one.

What clutch do you have? Upping the boost can possibly upset the apple cart I know mine started slipping when I had higher boost.

Sorry if thats not a very conclusive reply.

it will be fine but get it checked on a rolling road to be on the safe side. Never did the loop on my first pulsar, I used a bleed valve.

I'm sure I will get everyone saying its a bad idea and don't do it but it worked fine for me for a year or so until I bought an electronic boost controller which will hold the boost more stable no doubt.

If clutch starts slipping you can always back the power off or upgrade

1bar loop is fine .... if its standard and still has the restrictor in the pipe then you should see 1bar  .... i run 1bar loop for almost 2years with no issues ....

Best getting a boost controller as safer, better boosting control.
Profec B's can be had cheap & simple set up & do good job.
Always worth a RR check as any issues could kill the engine rather quickly plus it nice to see how your car doing.

10running 1 bar boost Empty think try a boost controllor 14th January 2015, 7:38 am

thanks for the advice.. because its running with no issues just a bit worried to do anything that might mess it up . so if i set up a manual boost control first and go from there Idea

Bob has a few boost controllers such as the hks evc III for £150
Good thing with those is you can have high/low boost plus switching off puts you back to stock actuator boost but you still got the digital boost gauge function on the evc which handy.
wire that in & get it setup on RR & see how it does. Least that way you got confidence it working good, cost bit more but can save you in long run plus with age of these cars they do need good check before boosting .
Most f00ked engines come from boosted motors but owners not wanting pay for RR session then pistons are cooked & 4 figure rebuild needed.
I ran mine for years at 1.2 bar on a greddy boost controller & a unichip
and as made effort setting it up with couple of rechecks it never gave any bother & had decent power for not much tuning part cost.

how do you know that a vacuum pipe hasnt blown off or split ? or maybe another related issue
if 1 bar loop is done correctly it will not spike boost and you will see fractionally under a bar real time in 3rd / 4th and slightly over in 1st and 2nd

as mr b said though electronic controllers are more reliable if set up correctly with surge/gain
dawes device is also reasonably accurate but will spike in higher gears

i run the 1 bar loop for a year and it was fine, walbro and into the tuners to have everything checked over, bought an avcr and wired it in and it was much better, seemed to spool up faster and keep the boost better, boost controllers are awesome gadgets

Yeh for price of a used Boost controller it a must really as far out performs the simple 1 bar loop & brass bleed valves plus most controllers have safety features, gauge & alarm

It was either fuel cut or det..!!!
Will replace hoses with samco vacuum hose this week..
Just weird it did it was like hitting limiter but was at 4.5k
So a bit of a service and health check I think.!!!

Could have jumped into limp mode if a pipe has split so worth checking any fault codes too

How do I check codes..!!???
Easy on subarus as just plug two wires together ..

Guess it will need a obd reader an can you reset the Ecu as "subarus" just unplug battery for a while 30 mins.!??

just as easy as the pre OBD2 subarus, probably easier actually.
you can read codes by flashing CEL & also red led on the ECU too .
basic outline in link below, worth downloading the R manuals for reference too (links are on this site useful links section or google it)

the stock actuator will not open until 0.5bar so will be governed by actuator spring rate
